Tri-x Film
Nikkormat with 100mm Nikkor lens

In the late 60’s through the 70’s Mexico City was growing at a rate of 24000 people a month. Most of these people were from rural areas and were subsistence farmers. Many were not familiar with indoor plumbing, the only electricity they knew was a bare bulb sometimes hanging outside their palm thatched huts. They came for work and were unprepared for the city. Many settled in Shanty Towns, called Lost Cities in Mexico, on the outskirts of the city. Cardboard, plastic, corrugated metal and scrap wood homes huddled closely together with open sewers running between them.

They were constantly harrassed by the police and told me at night bulldozers would sometimes collapse the walls of the exterior huts. The government wanted them to move saying they would build housing but the residents didn’t trust them and had nowhere to go. The leader of this settlement of 5000 people was a school teacher who lived in the center of the maze with uzzi carrying security at different checkpoints as you were led through the maze.

I spent a day inside the one of these settlements in the early 70’s getting to know the people and photographing them. They asked me to take a picture and wanted to make sure the youngest would be seen.

I photograph people I’ve never seen before. I don’t know any of them, but we often share a close and intense moment. This picture, from a small village in rural Rajasthan, is one example. Our eyes met and held fast. A second or two later, he turned away. When he turned back the expression had gone – replaced this time, by magic, with a big, and equally eloquent, smile.

I like taking pictures of people. Sometimes they are knowing subjects, and sometimes not. But they always have something to say, which we can quickly and readily understand, usually through their eyes or posture or expression. This young girl, standing coyly in the doorway of her home in a small remote village in rural Rajasthan, is someone who speaks quietly, brightly – and evocatively.

This is my Father….
He’s been a Grazier his entire life, but now finds himself in retirement living in a small city…..
No more manual labour, no more getting up before dawn, no more cracked & bleeding hands……
Dad is of that generation of people who dress in their good clothes to go out…. even if it’s only to the supermarket. Clothes must be ironed, & there’s usually a hat involved…..
Somehow I was able to convince Dad to sit for a formal portrait but without dressing up. I wanted to catch him in his work clothes. Clothes that now do the gardening, rather than mustering or shearing sheep all day.

Dignity comes from within, does it not?

Brand New Hairdo

Digital Art

Photoshop CS4 or 5

Original drawing in pencil on paper, photographed and coloured/painted digitally with Photoshop. I used my grandmother’s teacup set which she has handed down to me, and sketched myself (pencil and paper) holding it with pinky finger lifted, in the mirror for a reference point.

This little miss is sipping on a cup of tea, enjoying her brand new hairdo!! Her pet bird sits atop singing sweet tunes…and other birds have come to rest upon her pinky finger and on her shoulder A sweet card or print for your girlfriends’ birthdays and special occasions.
