Dear Esteemed Nominees, Solo Exhibition Members, and Guests,

Tuesday, July 24th, with the opening of the 17th Juried Invitational Art Exhibition, presented by the Solo Exhibition group of RedBubble, we celebrate ninety-two (92) artists, representing twenty-one (21) countries, and exhibiting one-hundred and eight (108) photographs and artworks along the theme of “the portrait”. The show highlights portraiture through photographic, digital, and traditional fine art works from the esteemed Solo community.

Solo hosts invited select works for exhibition along the theme. Twenty-three of the exhibits are works selected from a companion Portrait Workshop, where traditional and digital artists took inspiration and reference from a catalog of fine photographs along the theme of the show. These reference works are noted in the exhibition, by a linked thumbnail image, crediting the originator. Two photographs created during the workshop are also featured in the exhibition.

Out of the 108 entries in the juried exhibition, there are 54 Traditional artworks, 34 Photographic works, and 20 Digital artworks, from some 92 artists.

Awards for 1st – 3rd places in the Traditional Art, Digital Art, and Photographic Art categories, will be awarded, based on the total of Judges’ scores. The artwork with the highest score, over all categories, will be awarded “Best in Show”, besides a category first place. Judges will also make special merit awards.

*The show runs from July 24th through August 12th, 2012. Awards Day will be Tuesday, August 7th.

You might also be interested in a companion link to the Portrait Workshop – Show & Tell. Artists who participated in the companion workshop were encouraged to discuss how they produced their artwork, and show their work in progress. This area will continue to build as more of the artists document their artistic journey.

The workshop schedule for Solo’s 2012 season is posted. All Redbubble artists and the public are welcome. You will need to sign up for Redbubble and Solo Exhibition group membership to participate.

Congratulations to all! And thank you for coming to the exhibition and supporting these wonderful artists.

Each month of the Solo season, all of the members of the Solo Exhibition group have the opportunity for one or more of their works to be selected for a “SoJie” (Solo’s Juried Invitational Exhibition). To qualify, a member has to have joined the group at least in the calendar month prior to the current show. If you would like to be considered for next month’s show, which will focus on portraits, join now!

Your comments on the art are welcome. Comments begin following the exhibits; on page 6.

Respectfully,

F.A. Moore, Solo Founder and host

Elizabeth Bravo, Solo Graphics Coordinator

Maxy, Solo Reception Manager

Pastels on #140 Strathmore Water Color Paper

My pastor posted a picture of his dear mother from Minneapolis on his FaceBook this weekend, and she was so sweet I felt compelled to try and draw her with pastels. I gave it to her this AM at church in Santa Monica. She just looked and looked at it, then said “Well it really does look like me.” I was so happy I almost cried.

On September 30, 1955, Dean was doing a reckless 85 miles an hour in his Silver Porche Spyder on Highway 41 at Chalome, near Paso Robles. he was speeding, en route to a sports car race at Salinas, when he smashed into another vechile. He was mangled, DOA at Paso Robles Hospital.
Warners was grieved for financial reasons-Rebel and Giant had not been released and films starring recently deceased actors generally had bad track records. Then, without any studio hype, a legend grew. It was only several months after his death that the cult began to grow to vast proportions. The release of Rebel Without a Cause set off the greatest wave of posthumous worship in modern history. The rebel had died but the youth quake was born.

Corel Painter X chalks on sandy pastel paper

As I scratched and sketched with my stylus on graphics pad it reminded me of the sound of Grumbacher and Rembrandt pastels on pastel paper that I used to work with in my ‘real media’ days. Creating this image was just as satisfying and I came away with clean hands!

In Silence

Traditional Art

Traditional Watercolour on Arches 140lb paper
20in x 14in Approx

Ref credits on image page

I work from semi wet, where I have painted my subject with water before I start. Then I continue with pigment almost ignoring where I went before. Watercolour has something no other medium has, but to produce this you need to let it have some control. Working in this way, I find allows it to do so, whilst I control the rest of it.

This was painted as part of my “Children of the World” collection. I have grown a deep passion for painting portraits and very often drift into the emotion I see in the person, while I’m painting. To paint a portrait is to capture the soul of the person, and I believe these shows through with emotion. There is no more genuine an emotion than that showing on the face of a child. I am trying to capture these emotions, the ones behind the eyes, the ones they often try to hide.

Fighting the Demons
by Ken Eccles

Traditional Art

Graphite on cartridge paper
30cm x 40cm

My first drawing since I was a boy turned out okay, and made me realise that if I set my mind to it I could actually get on paper something that actually looked like someone. This drawing followed that first one and became my second since childhood. I set myself the task of trying capture the determination of my erstwhile bad-boy younger brother on his journey of transformation into the wonderful man, father and husband he is now. His time in the army was that time of transformation so this drawing is supposed to represent that moment in time. That cusp.

While our father was impressed by it (that’s his job, right?) I just thought it was what it was. He nagged me to submit it to the Australian War Memorial for consideration, and in order to shut him up I did. Astoundingly the curator of art there acquired the original, which will be hung in due course at the AWM. And of course I can’t shut my dad up with his “I told you so!”s.
