Digital Art I’ve had a block for a few days, but finally got an inspiration from the song when I heard it on the radio today, My Maria. I found this beautiful stock image and knew as soon as I saw it that was the one. I love the energy of this song and the final results of the image. I created the landscape using Terragen Hope you like it as much as I do.

Digital Art Deep Sleep is done in an oil painting on canvas style. Three stock images (see credits, description page) were hand selected, then layered and manipulated, combined, lighted, etc., etc. Interspersed are layers of digital brush-painted layers. The flattened perspective is intentional to give the work a stylized feel. This was one of several images exploring the theme of death for the Exquisite Corpse project.

Digital Art This is a picture I took of my little girl erin at Aberdour Castle. It is located in the village of Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. Parts of the castle date from around 1200, making Aberdour one of the oldest datable standing castles in Scotland.

Digital Art Metempsychosis , n. The passage of the soul, as an immortal essence, at the death of the animal body it had inhabited, into another living body, whether of a brute or a human being; transmigration of souls. – Sir T. Browne I used few dozen layers in CS5 to create this. To finish up I added some rain for more “action”.

Photographic Art To over expose the bridge, sky and surroundings and create the high key effect – this was shot on tripod with 2.5 sec exposure, F7.1 iso 200 at 40mm. Work then done using photoshop to create the exact effect I was after, taking out a few shadows, clouds and artifacts from the image to keep it clean. This is exactly how I wanted the image to turn out. This new bridge in Taranaki, NZ has recently scooped international prizes for best new bridge design in the world, putting our town on the world stage again. Set beautifully against the Coastal walkway – it was sculpted to represent the surf and waves that taranaki is famous for.

Photographic Art Dress rehearsal shoot for North Shore Dance Academy’s Eisteddfodd classical & contemporary ballet group entry. As the dancers were warming up, my eyes caught her she was in her own little world rehearsing when out of the blues she started flying across the room. I scrambled to shoot, before I knew it they were called to rehearse. The horizontal flight against the vertical background makes a very interesting contrast.

Traditional Art A friend gave me these beautiful flowers for my birthday one time, I just had to draw them along with one of my favourite images of Elie Nadelman’s horse sculpture on the wall. I set up in one of the bedrooms in an old house we lived in with beautiful turn of the century glass windows. The dresser is an old red cedar dresser, they called it red gold around here, the area we live in is the remnants of a vast rainforest that settlers came to to find the timber.

Photographic Art Saw this beautiful cityscape at twilight and as I approached the spot to take the shot, I noticed the guy punting his boat across the water. Pretty cool commute I’d say. Taken December 2010.

Digital Art A fun personal test to see if I could take Traditional Photography’s Depth Of Field style/technique, and apply it using only photoshop on a zebra illustration i had just completed , to see if it could be done. This was important to me, as i am capable of both 2D art and 3D art, and I was very curious to test if I could succeed at a ‘hybrid’ using only 2D photoshop tools. I stared at this Zebra for so long, i think i saw his soul! ;)

Photographic Art When I was young I saw a painting of my great grandmother wearing her feather cloak. She held a greenstone mere in her hand and wore greenstone earrings. On her chin like many woman back then she had a moko which to this day has intrigued me. I have always wanted to photograph woman and men with moko but they are few and far between…until today when Tony pointed out Tui to me. I stalked her to the womans room and was trying to work out how to approach her when she approached me. And this resulted in a series of photos back at our house. And below is her story. My name is Tui Roman. I am Nga Puhi, Ngati Whatua ( which are maori tribes in NZ ). My ta moko was done by Abe in Dargaville. It represents an Imperfection / reflection. It was given to me by my tupuna ( family ) meaning any imperfection is a reflection of my life.
