#Matt Mawson (mmawson)
banner created by Elizabeth Bravo, Graphics Coordinator, Solo Exhibition Semi-retired in Queensland, Australia, Matt Mawson is best known for his classic vector drawings, based on his photographs of people and their pets— a win-win combination for Matt. Lesser known, are his fantastic, digitally enhanced images of antique cars. In Matt’s hands, they might be transformed to Freddy Fender, Freddie Mercury, or Freddy Krueger. His solo exhibition show primarily focuses on his extreme makeover of classic autos. Drawing since a pre-teen, when his interest was consumed by comics and cartoons of greats like Carl Banks and Rich Rich, Matt Mawson’s creativity boomed in the sixties with the advent of the Beatles, the British invasion of pop rock, and the whole sixties culture. He drew for the Radio Times and Cane Toad Times, before eventually going freelance, and combining his photography with vector drawing. Matt has illustrated books, including “The gentle art of cat surfing”, cartoons by Matt Mawson (University of Queensland Press, 1981), “Talks with my skateboard: a collection of poems” by Libby Hathorn (ABC Enterprises, 1991), and “Let’s experiment”, by Deane Hutton and Rob Morrison (Jacaranda Press, 1986). His 1981 book of cartoons has been updated with new drawings and color as The Lost Art of Cat Surfing, on LuLu. Matt also has a channel on YouTube, where he demonstrates how he produces a vector drawing. The video is sped up, so that hours-long process is compressed to just a few, exciting minutes. Matt has two more volumes on Lulu: Blink (2009), and Vectored (2008, 2nd ed.).
