I was intending to photograph the beautiful combination of yellow forsythia and New Zealand Flax beside a small hedge. When I positioned myself to take the shot this little sparrow hopped on to a branch and started to sing right in front of me, so I shifted my focus to the bird, and still enjoy the pleasing bokeh of the foliage behind. / Panasonic lumix DMC-FZ50 / FEATURED IN I LOVE BIRDS APRIL 30 2009
MORNIN’ SUNSHINE / By: DALE CRUM Twas a most gentle start to the fairest of April days…a sweet twistin’ misty morn…adrift with fluffy fog sittin’ atop the fresh spring blooms… tenderly she kissed each and every one o’ them flowers awake… / When the rising sleepy sun brightly pierced through the quiet canopy of the tallest wise oaks… he could nay help but notice all the wee creatures gathered about a soft hill of ivy… they were whispering one to the other in hushed tones… for in their natural midst there was one still-slumberin’… a wee tiny precious ruby-haired Princess of the man world… twas indeed nay a normal happenin’…the chunky lil’ bunnies were as always the most curious of all… one waddled his belly up, and sniffed of her rosy cheek… and his long curved whiskers did tickle her pouty mouth… she wiped her lips of the ticklin’… as her lovely chocolate eyes did lightly flutter a groggy glance of the gatherin’ critter crowd… not a fear nor a tremble had she one… but only a teensy weensy tiny giggle made the Princess fair… as the wise old horned owl stepped up and leaned in… as always the spokesbird for the reserved rest of the woodland creatures… “Mornin’ Sunshine”, he said with a note of kindness and welcome curiosity…

This is one of the places along Southwold Harbour in Suffolk in the UK that you can get freshly caught fish to take home or eat with in the premises. From Boat to here 30 meters. I really liked the netting draoped against the black wooden building, most of the huts and buildings along the Harbour are black wooden slatted and all jumbled together. D90 Nikon camera set on “P” and Nikkor 18-105mmVR lens Focal length 85mm / F/. 5.6 / Exposure 1/500 sec and + 1 step / ISO 400 Slight level chnage in photoshop and processed through redynamix 1 image HDR software, to slightly lift the textures but nothing else done. / Hand Held DSLR user since Jan 09. *Southwold is famous for its light house, and harbour is known for the fresh fish and chips, and champion catching crab season. It is a seaside resort that has a air of “money about it” beautiful big houses, designer shops and lots of wonderful Galleries. It is crowded in the summer by tourists but quieter in the winter.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city and life can be very good. It is one of the major Banking and Financial capitols of the world. The National Gallery of Scotland, just behind the sleeping figure, is testament to the fact that the arts and culture are alive and well in this lovely city, but as in every city, there are the misplaced and unfortunate souls who find that there is no place for them and are forced to live out their lives on the streets. Spare a moment, and if you can, spare a little cash to help those less fortunate than ourselves, for there, but for the grace of God, go we all … Taken at The Mound during the very enjoyable redbubble meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th April 09. It was a great day out with a bunch of very talented photographers. For a tighter view of the sleeper, have a look at Beauty Sleep, an excellent image from Rachael Macleod. Check out Rachael’s work, you will not be disappointed. Camera: Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi in the USA) BEST VIEWED LARGER Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. For FailingMemory.. / Lal Lal is in the middle of the Gold fields, between Buninyong and Elaine, and my where i live.. / Victoria’s only attempt at mining and smelting iron ore took place at Lal Lal in the latter stages of the nineteenth century. In the mid 1870s, the Lal Lal Iron Company installed mining machinery, erected a large blast furnace and constructed a tramway to convey ore from the mine. For a brief time in the early 1880s, the Lal Lal Company had over 100 men engaged in mining and smelting the iron ore, gathering limestone (flux) and firewood, and manufacturing charcoal. The company also operated a foundry at Ballarat. The Lal Lal Iron Works had ceased operations by the end of the 1880s. The Lal Lal Iron Mine and Smelting Works is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to the State of Victoria. The site is already listed on the Register of the National Estate. The Lal Lal Iron Mine and Smelting Works is historically and scientifically important as the site of the State’s only attempt to smelt iron ore with a blast furnace. The significance of the site is enhanced by the substantial remnants of the blast furnace being of its type surviving in the southern hemisphere. The Lal Lal Iron Mine and Smelting Works is scientifically important for its illustration of local adaptation of imported iron smelting technology. The design of the furnace, construction materials, and smelting technique used at the site harking back to 18th century European iron smelting technology. The site is archaeologically important for its potential to yield artefacts and evidence which will be able to provide significant information about the technological history of mining. My daughter Kelsey and I had been playing around taking some pictures when I had the idea to have her looking up as if something were coming out of her head. In the back of my mind I was remembering a children’s book by Dr Seuss titled Daisy Head Mayzie. The book is about a young girl who suddenly sprouts a yellow daisy from the top of her head, and the resultant chaos the ensues. Image taken with Canon 40D and Canon 24-105mm lens + external flash. The extract below was found on the internet: Dr. Seuss was dead, but his widow had discovered one last manuscript. Ten years later, Seuss’s sketches for its illustrations were finally expanded to create a complete story. The book is dedicated by his widow “to the ongoing presence of Theodor S. Geisel…Dr. Seuss.” And in “Daisy-head Mayzie”, the narrator is even represented by the ultimate Seuss symbol – the Cat in the Hat! Remember the little girl whose house was visited by the Cat in the Hat? Mayzie looks a little bit like her! She’s got blonde hair and round innocent eyes – but one day at school, “something peculiar was going on.” On the top of her head, she’d suddenly sprouted a daisy! And it befuddles even the adults, including Mayzie’s teacher. I love how the characters have names that sound like Seuss-ical rhymes. The daisy’s confirmed by Einstein Van Tass (“the brightest young man in the whole of the class.”) The girl’s teacher is “Miss Sneetcher,” and she whisks Mayzie to the Principal’s office. And the Principal’s name is “good Gregory Grumm…a very wise man, just as smart as they come.” But most of all there’s funny drawings. Mayzie’s mom is a welder – she’s first seen wearing a blowtorch mask – while Mayzie’s father (with a dapper moustache) works as a shoe salesman. Dr. Eisenbart looks like your classic cartoon quack, with a bald head and tufts of hair sticking up under a stethoscope. And Mayzie’s super-intelligent Principal sits under an enormous arch of school books, staring at the flower through a three-lensed magnifying glass. The drawings seem even more playful with Seuss’s rhymes about the misplaced daisy. “I’ve seen them quite often in fields growing wild. But never before on the head of a child.” The daisy gets bigger, and soon a scheme hatches in the mind of Dr. Eisenbart. “I think that Mayzie and her plant / Could help me get a research grant.” Dr. Seuss seems to be hiding a subversive message in his book. Yes, there’s a daisy on the girl’s head – but the grown-ups all have their own agenda. Soon the mayor has converted Mayzie’s flower into a campaign issue. A Hollywood agent named Finagle appears, offering Mayzie his business card. Eventually her miracle is being commercialized, with “Daisy-head burgers and Daisy-head drinks, Daisy-head stocking and Daisy-head sinks.” But Dr. Seuss has one last twist in the story, since Mayzie believes that she’s lost all her friends. She sits in despair, convinced nobody loves her. And soon all the petals of her flower start dropping off one by one. Why? Dr. Seuss explains in a rhyme. “You know about daisies. When love is in doubt, The job of a daisy is Try and Find Out!”
