Looking from Hope Cove towards the Bolt Tail headland on the edge of Bigbury Bay. Hope Cove has in the past been a smugglers haunt – but is now more famous for its crab and lobster fishing boats. The St. Peter the Great ship of the Spanish Armada was grounded in the bay on the Shippen Rock in 1588 – some of it’s beams were salvaged for use in some of the local buildings. Bright Star In September 1820, poet John Keats landed at Lulworth Cove in Dorset, England on his way to Italy as a passenger on board the sailing brig ‘Maria Crowther’. Apparently he wrote the poem Bright Star (below) to commemorate his last night on English soil. Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art- / Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night / And watching, with eternal lids apart, / Like nature’s patient, sleepless Eremite, / The moving waters at their priestlike task / Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores, / Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask / Of snow upon the mountains and the moors- / No-yet still stedfast, still unchangeable, / Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast, / To feel for ever its soft fall and swell, / Awake for ever in a sweet unrest, / Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, / And so live ever-or else swoon to death. John Keats In common with many places along the Dorset coast, Lulworth also has a smuggling history. Photograph taken: 27th September 2009
The old boathouse at Cadgwith was used for generations as repair workshop for the many small fishing boats that used to be used for pilchard fishing from the port. These days, most of the boats catch crabs and lobsters but it’s good to see them still using traditional methods that are sustainable for fish stocks. Cadgwith is situated near the Lizard Point on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula and I’m delighted to see it has changed so little in all the years I’ve been visiting it, long may it remain so. Just a fun piece of writing to highlight the Great West Country Getaway, which is a joint group meet taking place on March 22nd 2010 in Cornwall for a minimum of 4 nights. Also for fun, I have incorporated the names of the three groups involved within the poem. If anyone else wants to join in the fun in March, then feel free to join us.

Originally uploaded in March ‘08, this was a capture of the storm that hit SW England that same month. / This was taken from the bridge at Dawlish Railway Station, Devon, England. / Despite the rough weather, the trains continued to run, and this stretch of track is the most expensive to maintain, due to the battering it gets from the sea. / This is a common sight in Dawlish during the winter months, and sometimes during the Summer months also. This picture was originally tonemapped by Dave Warren and I have revamped it a little bit to give it a slightly different look. Thanks again to Dave for his help with this. Ventnor Beach, Isle Of Wight A warm, sunny day at the end of October in the seaside town of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. British weather at its unpredictable best! Situated in the Solent off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight is 23 miles long by 13 miles wide and has 60 miles of largely unspoilt coastline from the The Needles in the west to Bembridge in the east. Ventnor faces south-east and is sheltered by the land mass of St Boniface down, the highest point on the island at 787 feet. Ventnor’s Museum of Smuggling History was opened in 1973 with the help of the local council. It features 700 years of smuggling methods and artefacts and life sized models of personalities from the smuggling past. Date: 29th October 2009
