Winterset is the birth place of John Wayne. This picture was taken in January of 2008 with my canon S15 !
This place is called Bilgers Rocks. In Central PA / I love to bring my kids there . We love to bring a picnic lunch and eat it on the rocks. / The kids love to climb the rocks and there are tunnels through the rocks they love to go through with there flashlights and glowsticks… so much fun. / Blocks of rock average 20’ to 25’ thick. / The rocks are part of the Homewood Sandstone Member (Curwensville Formation, Pottsville Group, Pennsylvania age). The “city” was formed by FROST WEDGING. Water gets into the cracks and as it freezes it cracks and breaks sections of the sandstone away from the main body. As water continues to enter the cracks it slowly erodes the soft sandy soil out from under the broken section of rock. Gravity then slowly moves the large slabs of rock down the hillside. The cracks vary in width from several inches to as much as 25” in width. Several cracks are up to 50’ long. This is a work in progress. Taken with my kodak Z1285. / In this pic. is my three kids, Mr. Reed and his two sisters and a sisters boyfriend. / Kids ages; 6, 8, 11.
