The Ruby II, on her trolley at Keiss Harbour, Caithness, Highland. Unlike the heyday of fishing in the north east (when you could literally walk from one side of a large harbour to the other across the decks of boats), days at sea are restricted due to European Union regulations. Whilst it’s tough on the fishermen, it begs the question, what’s the option? If we continue to fish, we will have barren seas. If we don’t we will have unemployed fishermen. The Harbour and the fishing store are both category A listed buildings (HB no.14085, listed on 28 Nov 1984). Dating from 1831 and designed by James Bremner, himself from Keiss.

The late afternoon sun casts shadows across the old milk can from the BROOKLAWN CRY, CO. I assume “CRY” is the abbreviation for “Creamery”. This old milk can is a remnant of the days when our home was a country farm house in Fountain Green, Utah. It’s still in the country though we no longer farm. It did its duty hauling milk and has since retired to serve as a yard decoration. Nikon D300 / Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm at 42mm (63mm equiv) / 1/750 sec at f/5.6 © R. Mike Jacobson – All Rights Reserved
