Sandwick, Shetland Isles, Scotland at 4am on May 23rd.. Not a breath of wind to disturb the peace and quiet as the sun has yet to burn off the early morning mist. / Quite often the best time of day weatherwise in Shetland.
.......and washed away with the next tide
During the Second World War, Italian prisoners of war were employed in the construction of the Churchill Barriers. During their leisure time they were allowed to construct this chapel from a couple of nissan huts. It was designed by Domenico Chiochetti.

This neolithic tomb,at the Knowe of Yarso on the island of Rousay in Orkney, was constructed in about 3000 BC. When it was excavated in 1934 the remains of 29 people were discovered with the skulls arranged neatly against the wall. The remains of up to 30 animals. mainly deer, were also discovered. Curious.
The North Sea uncharacteristically smooth on a beautiful Spring morning. The old buildings were probably part of the herring station that existed here, at Broonies Taing, Sandwick, Shetland Isles, Scotland about 100 years ago.
Was with the puffins today and it was such a beautiful sunny day (well when I was there). I took this close up of the puffin cause I just love their eyes as much as their beaks. Those are the two aspects i wanted to highlight in this image.
Just a couple more gannets to go now:-) / It was the contrast of dark, deep water and the bright white of the gannet that stood out, I’m glad to say that the camera did a superb job of getting the exposure right! / Gannets are easy to recognize even at vast distances, partly because they are so large (6’ wing-span and 3’ beak to tail) but mainly because they shine a brilliant white that is quite unlike any other sea-bird (at least around the UK waters). / They also feed in an unmistakable way by diving from a great height into the sea to catch fish or squid. They enter the water at a colossal speed and have to bend their wings right back at the moment of entry to prevent serious injury. They also have an air-cushioned bill to protect the head and neck. This series of shots were taken from the Seabirds and Seals boat trip as we headed to and from the island of Noss (just off the east coast of Shetland) and where there is one of the largest gannet colonies in the country. Thanks for looking / Richard Tech detls / Nikon D300 / Nikon 55-200mm VR@180mm / f10 1/400s / -2.0EV / ISO 320 Location: / HU555395
part of a pod of Killer Whales (Orcas) just off Shetland. numbering around 100 in total. very difficult to get a decent image from the air.
As promised, here are a few pictures of one of Britain’s most impressive birds, the Great Skua, known in the Northern Isles as the ‘Bonxie’. / It is a bit like a very stocky large gull but dark brown and with a fierce expression! It spends its time looking for other seabirds which have caught a meal and then chases them relentlessly until they give in and hand their lunch over! It is also perfectly capable of eating some of the smaller birds whole, so is not exactly the most loveable of birds but you can’t help but admire it as being superb at its job. Being very dark, they aren’t easy to get a good photograph of and especially as they tend to be either out at sea engaging in their piratical activities or near their nests, which they will fiercely defend by attacking whoever goes near. I have never experienced an attack from a bonxie but it must be a frightening experience! This series of shots were taken from the Seabirds and Seals boat trip as we headed to and from the island of Noss (just off the east coast of Shetland). With so many nesting birds hereabouts, it is prime bonxie territory and it is an amazing sight to see many of them looking for gannets bringing home their catch to their waiting chicks.
