The Golden Age of sci-fi began with the “pulp era” of the 1930’s ending in the later 1950’s followed by the “New Wave” science fiction of the 60’s and 70’s. Some thought the style ~ grand adventure set in outer space ~ was a thing of the past. Then, along came Star Wars! Either way, according to historian Adam Roberts, “the phrase Golden Age valorises a particular sort of writing: hard sci-fi, linear narratives, grand heroes solving problems or countering threats in a space-opera idiom”.
Well, never mind the definition. You recognize it when you see it! We’re talking here about the Good Old Stuff: Space Opera at its finest (some might say, “its worst”), such as featured in the pages of Astounding Science Fiction, Weird Tales, Galaxy, Amazing Stories and the like.
Let’s see your best in pulp-fiction Sci-Fi style Art! (Please submit ORIGINAL material).
Whether done by hand, Bryce, Photoshop or any other medium, It should have the flavor of the era. Now, it’s Retro: at the time it was futuristic, albeit not very scientific. Again, Space Opera was the order of the day: big heroes, big ships, big battles, big bug-eyed aliens and yes, ok, we must admit it ~ ~ big-busted heroines. (But please… no obscenity, no outright nudity. It wasn’t done at the time and doesn’t fit the challenge, now. Any entries deemed unsuitable will be removed at the discretion of the hosts.)
You can add text, or not. There should be space for titles though, as with any real artwork destined for the cover of a magazine.
Vote for your favorites (you can vote for more than one) based on visual impact, artistic merit, creativity ~ and of course how well the entries fit the theme.
Winner will receive a $20 Voucher from the Bubble and a winner’s banner. Also, a Special Feature on our pages.
In event of a tie, we will have Joint Winners. Red Bubble recognizes ties, and who are we to argue?
The Top 10 will receive banners and a separate feature page as well.
The cover image for this challenge features part of my collection from the Good Old Days and will give you an idea of the type of art which was popular in pulp science fiction.
Have fun! And best of luck to all who enter. We’re looking forward to your wild and imaginative work!
Please be sure your work is in the group. If it’s not it will be removed by voting time and you will forfeit your chance to win.
