This splendidly colored male Ornate Box Turtle was resting under some tree roots the other day as I was looking for mushrooms. I just happened to glance over and saw the sun shine on his shell. / WOW / Talk about COLORS! He honestly, had to be one of the prettiest ones I’ve ever been blessed to see. Reds, oranges, yellows…........those bright red eyes…......he was fabulous..and shy as heck. Couldn’t get him to even come out far enuf to eat a mushroom I tried to gift him with. / When I came back the next day I found the hole he’d dug himself to prepair for his winter hybernation. / Found in NE Kansas….a wonderful new-age dinosaur! These will live to about 50 years if left alone with no damage or human intervention. / I’ve raised tons of these as a kid, and even up till 4 years ago they were still pretty common in my area. Sadly, because they DO make such easy pets, their lives have become very limited now in the wild. Habitat loss, human encrouchment, poisons, pesticides…........all has made this turtle become more and more scarce. This year, we only saw 3. 10 years ago, 30 wouldn’t have seemed odd. / / Featured in: / 100% / THANX SOOOOO MUCH!
Taking a walk with my BFF Angie, I spotted this Desert Spiney Lizard as well as others that day. He was bobbing up in down in his territorial way.

Somedays all you need is a warm sunny spot to curl up in.
Sunbaking lizard on a hot dirt path.
A juvenile about to take a dip.
I actually intended on going up to Paradise Park, up behind Murrurundi, to get some photos of the rocky landscape. I didn’t have a lot of time up my sleeve so I was in a bit of a rush. Anyway, driving along the loose gravel road, I saw this fellow sunbaking… right in the middle of the road. I had to stop to get some photos and he just wouldn’t move!
(Terrapene carolina major) Shot was taken in the Florida panhandle.

This lizard has found our yard to be home, until two days ago when it went missing, nowhere to be seen, that is till i decided to clean the swimming pool, and there it was , hanging on for dear life on the flap lid of the filter box ,submerged except for its head. No doubt looking for a drink, he’s fallen in,and possibly been there for at least 2 days. / Gave me a bit of a fright to see what looked very much like a snakes head peeping out of the filter box within the pool. / Its safe now and back in the garden ’’ somewhere ’’ / /
