This splendidly colored male Ornate Box Turtle was resting under some tree roots the other day as I was looking for mushrooms. I just happened to glance over and saw the sun shine on his shell. / WOW / Talk about COLORS! He honestly, had to be one of the prettiest ones I’ve ever been blessed to see. Reds, oranges, yellows…........those bright red eyes…......he was fabulous..and shy as heck. Couldn’t get him to even come out far enuf to eat a mushroom I tried to gift him with. / When I came back the next day I found the hole he’d dug himself to prepair for his winter hybernation. / Found in NE Kansas….a wonderful new-age dinosaur! These will live to about 50 years if left alone with no damage or human intervention. / I’ve raised tons of these as a kid, and even up till 4 years ago they were still pretty common in my area. Sadly, because they DO make such easy pets, their lives have become very limited now in the wild. Habitat loss, human encrouchment, poisons, pesticides…........all has made this turtle become more and more scarce. This year, we only saw 3. 10 years ago, 30 wouldn’t have seemed odd. / / Featured in: / 100% / THANX SOOOOO MUCH!
Taking a walk with my BFF Angie, I spotted this Desert Spiney Lizard as well as others that day. He was bobbing up in down in his territorial way.

Featured in “300 + Go Long!” October 2009 A Balkan Green Lizard photographed in its natural habitat along a river at Chrousos on the Greek Island of Lesvos (or Lesbos). / Lesvos is a renowned location for seeing and photographing migratory birds moving through to breed in eastern Europe and Asia Minor, which is in fact why I was there. Added bonuses to photographing birds included some wonderful landscapes and a variety of reptiles, mammals and wildflowers. Canon 20D / 1/200sec f8 ISO 200 / 500mm lens + 1.4x converter

My appologies…it’s actually a Yellow-belly Racer. / The first I’ve been able to handle….normally a very quick snake to flee…and nippy when cornered…this fellow was trying to sun on a road. Luckily, my son and I came across him before another car did. I photographed him a few times before I picked him up slowly…I’m not big on being nipped…and he was actually extremely gentle. / I was able to get a lot of images of him….even with cars slowing down to site-see as they passed us. / Non-venemous…they eat insects, frogs, other snakes, rodents and birds. / This image is after I set him on the side of the road near the wooded edge…he just curled up in a ball and tried to tuck his nose down into his coils. The yellow shows why he has such an obvious name…....as does his speed when zipping away.
