The Florida panther is a highly threatened representative of cougar (Puma concolor) that lives in the low tides, palm forests and swamps of southern Florida in the United States. Its current taxonomic status (Puma concolor coryi or Puma concolor couguar) is unresolved. The Florida Panther is also known as the cougar, mountain lion, puma, and catamount. Males weigh about 169 pounds and live within a range that includes the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. This population, the only unequivocal cougar representative in the eastern United States, currently occupies only 5% of its historic range. The number of living Florida panthers is estimated to be between 80 and 100. In 1982, the Florida panther was chosen as the Florida state animal. Southern Florida is a fast-developing area, and declining habitat threatens this species. The two highest causes of mortality for the Florida panthers are automobile injuries and aggression between panthers for territory. The primary threats to the population as a whole include habitat loss, habitat degradation, and habitat fragmentation. The lighthouse commenced operation on July 10, 1860 it is made of brick, it was painted red in 1910 due to discoloration caused by humidity. It is 108 feet tall and has a circular stairway with 105 steps from the base of the tower to the lantern room The light itself is a first-order Fresnel lens manufactured in Paris by Henry-LePaute. The rotating lens flashes (burst of light when bulls-eye passes viewer’s line of vision) is 1.2 seconds, eclipses (darkens) 6.6 seconds, flashes 1.2 seconds, eclipses 21 seconds, and then repeats the cycle. The light can be viewed approximately 20 miles out at sea. / During the restoration work in 1999-2000, archaeologists uncovered shells and pottery fragments in excavations made on the hill near the base of the tower. The artifacts are believed to be remnants of a Native American colony, dating from around 700 AD. A Meet and greet photography club for those that live on the Treasure Coast of Florida and enjoy photographing the wildlife and beauty that is here. Through our photos and knowledge, we want to support conservation efforts for the endangered species and their habitats, thus ensuring that we and others can enjoy it for years to come.
We will have monthly meets at different places for photo shoots, fun, discussing techniques, tips, tricks and sharing knowledge and other information after the shoot over a meal at a local restaurant or brown bagging it at a local park. Minutes would be taken and posted in the forum and other forum topics would include tips, tricks, meet suggestions, etc. Dues will be collected and will be used to host one or two special BBQ-type meets per year and the balance will be used for prizes in the challenges (in the form of cash, RB vouchers, vouchers to local camera shops, galleries, museums, etc.) and possibly some will be donated to Florida conservation efforts.
