Hi Andrew,
In my opinion the framing isn’t that great.
The boat in the foreground is a little distracting.
Maybe you could try out a different crop?
best,
Benjamin

Keeping in mind that I know no more then you do about what is ‘great’ and what is not, I feel that scene is cramped up in a portrait format.
DoF tells you to look to the foreground, yet the foreground is squished up tightly, and incomplete. This effect only works well when there is great detail in the part-object. The boat hulls are relatively plain – nice curves, but not much detail. Therefore, to me, at least one boat needed to be complete.

The skyline is washed out. Nice colours, and could be fixed a little in post-processing for sure.

My honest opinion?
I would take it as a challenge, and go out and shoot it again, keeping in mind what has worked for you, and what hasn’t.

Cheers :)

as alluded to by previous posters, I think the landscape format would have better suited the picture. You also might want to try setting your WB to cloudy. That way you will get warmer colours in the sunset. You have great potential in that picture though and I look forward to seeing your new photos

If you’re shooting in RAW format, you may well be able to go back and play with the white balance/saturation.
That said, I’m not sure that the BG is the problem here – in fact, I quite like it. As mentioned, landscape would’ve been nice to see, but I think this could look equally good if you cropped the bottom out and made it something around square format.

To add to the already good advise, some ND grads might help to capture the sky.

Adrian, can you explain to a noob what ND grads are? Thanks kindly. :D

Here is a link to the most popular filter types Lee. It’s their ND grad page. It should explain.

Here is a picture i took with ND grads.

They have been the best purchase i have made. A must for landscape photography. Hitech also have good ND filters that i also use, but much cheaper than Lee.
