Hello, My name is Jesse-Hemstra-Blyth

I wish to become a professional photographer someday. I am working towards getting skills with photos, by talking photos and reviewing them, and how I could improve.

I need to know if this is the right way I am heading with this photo, meaning could there be any improvements on the conditions etc, Does this interest you ?

Personally I think there is way to much sky in this shot…..the gulls are not enough of a focal point so i would not have titled it as “Seagulls resting”... hope this helps…..

Hmmm, I have to agree with Dee. The portrait orientation doesn’t really work in this shot. A landscape oriented shot with less sky, lower to the ground and closer to the gulls would work better.

I concur with Helen and Dee. Overall not bad but the gulls do not have a significant enough presence. Definitely needed to be a landscape shot, not portrait.

Hey Jesse..

You have a straight horizon line, which from what i’ve seen on this forum is a very good first start in landscape photography :) I think you have a good eye, your other work certainly seems to attest to that.. I think where you might be lacking in this photo is a purpose. Why are you taking it? What are you trying to make the viewer see? If it’s the seagulls, then like the other guys said you need a much greater focus on them. I think especially if you are hoping to show them resting, as in the title, you need to be in close enough that you can see they are calm and uncaring. If you can manage that without scaring them :)

A good first step in this kind of thing is think about your message.. then try to work with the elements and frame the image to convey that message. Even if you see a scene and it immediately conjures up a feeling, make sure you take the photo with the idea of sharing that feeling with people.. That makes for the most effective shots in my opinion.
