Hey Hey it's Racism
Watch the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMAyGewq37w There’s a lot of talk about this in the Australian media, I’d love to hear your views here. Racist or not racist? |
In this day and age… god YES! Just kill the freakin’ show already!!! |
I find it offensive but would not have made a big deal out of it because I don’t think it was meant to be offensive. Intent is important to me. On the same note, people use words and expressions today that are generally acceptable which I find offensive. I’m sure they would stop using them if they knew where these expressions originated. I’m forced to think of myself as getting old. It’s a different world out there, for people my age. |
Racist, yes. Stupid, yes. An embarrassment, yes. Also, when they came back later and apologised, Daryl said something along the lines of: “in your country, it’s an insult to have a black face routine.” It’s offensive everywhere, Daryl. |
Yes, it’s racist. I’m also upset that so many people expressing an opinion on the internet think that Australia can’t be racist. Do schools honestly explore our past yet? It needs to happen. |
Yawn,, everything is racist,, again YAWN! |
There is racism in every culture, and in every walk of life. To give one example from a place you’ve been exposed to it let’s me see you have your own agenda.. It’s something that will be everywhere you go |
Sorry this bores you so much. |
Sorry Steve, you’ve lost me. Are you saying that because racism exists everywhere one instance of it is unimportant? Also, what is my agenda? |
To be bored by racism is to flout your privilege. |
racism is just one form of discrimination and bigotry… Racism is NOT ok… anywhere… Exclusion is NOT ok … anywhere… Discrimination is NOT ok … anywhere… Learn from is yes… but don’t repeat it and definitely DON”T advocate it… Or your soul will perish in the firey depths of HELL… and that’s all there is to it… and by HELL I am referring to a non-descript place of learning … not specific to one religion or faith system… COME ONNNN DAMIEN… YOU JUST WANT ATTENTION… and you are riding on the coat tails of DARRYL SOMers… I don’t know whether to hail you a genius or a ning-nong madman… Were they picking on people to get a laugh??? Yes… No more discussion required … AND BE NICE TO EVERYONE or Or your soul will perish in the firey depths of HELL… and that’s all there is to it… and by HELL I am referring to a non-descript place of learning … not specific to one religion or faith system… yadda yadda |
can someone elaborate on how it is racist, I’m a bit confused. |
I’m hoping that was a bunch of sarcasm, lol. If not, it was scary. edit: not referring to you, Ben. We posted at same time. |
There are people claiming that it doesn’t mean the same thing in Australia. What?? Also using the Indian heritage of the lead singer as some kind of excuse, like it somehow makes him unable to be racist. I appreciate that it’s possible that they didn’t fully understand the connotations of their act, but that just makes them ignorant (not as a pejorative, but as a simple fact). |
I’ve lived in different countries while growing up and have been exposed to racism in the different places I’ve lived, Racism is around the world.. I lived in Germany,, in the area I was in they hated the “Greeks” I was in the P.I. and they hated the Koreans. |
still confused |
Racism is totally stupid. |
Uh huh… and there is racism in Australia too. So… should we just accept it? We have an undercurrent of racism in Australia, and it’s largely ignored by the media… aside from the occasional riot that hits the headlines. I think we need to expose it wherever it is, not wait until people are getting attacked in the streets. ...which by way, is happening. |
Maybe we all need to sniff each others butts like dogs lol! |
so its historically based. A bad tradition that caused damage and hasn’t been forgotten. I think intent is important as Joan said. I thihnk I understand more now, cheers paul. |
Then I can’t help you. edit: Just saw your most recent post. Sorry for confusion, we posted at the same time. |
Ben the makeup is called “black face” and it was used in USA when black people were not allowed on stage to perform. Black people were portrayed by white people in black face. It’s a reminder of a very sad time in our history. That’s what most people find offensive. |
lol @ forum post timing cheers for links anyway. |
I read it as being worse than just performing as a black, but making a mockery of them. that to me is offensive, not just dressing up (that would be like crossdressing which I don’t think is treated as sexism, but could in in the wrong context) |
