Why can't I sell anything?

It’s so frustrating…I’ve been on this site for six months now and haven’t sold a single thing. I don’t think my photo’s are that bad – there are a few that I thought would have made lovely greeting cards or even canvases..

I network with people all the time. I promote this site on Facebook with all my friends and so on but still nothing…

What is the magic trick to selling?? I really, honestly thought i would have sold at least one greeting card by now! Grrrr…. excuse the rant, but any honest feedback about my work or idea’s on selling would be great…

Basically, it’s about marketing yourself.

Firstly, it’s helpful to separate your friends and your customers. You need to find people who demand the kind of work you do and put it in front of their faces. I use a huge variety of websites to promote myself and my work (I’m a freelance graphic artist).

Secondly, I’m going to list a whole bunch of sites you might want to check out to build a network of people who are interested in your work. Be nice to these people. Don’t give them the hard sell. Develop a rapport with them.

Some sites:
Tumblr – has quite a few artists using it now. The key to popularity is getting your posts “reblogged”.
Twitter – send short messages, perhaps with links to latest work or other sites with key information about your area of expertise.
Plurk – like twitter, but you can post images and videos and discuss your “plurks”.
Flickr – I make sure that I include a link to the Red Bubble page when I upload my work. I also connect with people in the flickr groups that I submit my art to.
StumbleUpon – a social bookmarking site where you can discover sites for your fellow stumblers to come upon.
del.icio.us – like SU, but just a pretty straight bookmarking site.

I also blog and have gotten sales from blog posts I’ve written that feature my work.

i think your photography is really lovely, gorgeous landscapes and seascapes. Do you have your own website? Even the RB private gallery site would go a long way if if you don’t, it looks a lot more professional than just a profile page. A lot of it looks like it may be area specific, if so, that may be a route to pursue for marketing as well. Also would make nice posters, either as is or with some text graphics. Good luck to you, there is nothing wrong with your work at all.

Each time I scan through the Community -> Activity -> Sales page, my feeling is that a large majority of sales on RB are for T-shirts, not images. Is this just my personal impression, or is there actually something to it?

I’ve noticed that also.

That does seem to be the case, which may lead me to look at some of my photos a little differently. I have a few that could work as pngs and would look good on Ts. There is a lot of tourist trade here and local images and Southwest designs sell well.
