Review of your portfolio...

I have just started reviewing my portfolio …deleting some images, and hiding others…with more to do.
I have realised that there are some images I used to like alot, that I was proud of..that I just am so fed up of now…and/or think they are crap.

I haven’t just taken off photos that have not been commented on much – I’ve taken off a few that many people have commented on and/or favorited… but feel that they don’t benefit my folio any more.

I realise my views and way I shoot now has changed quite dramatically since starting 9 months ago…and reviews like this reflect that.

Do you review, or do you tend to keep images on ?
How do you feel about your older shots now, and what has stood the test of time?

Nice topic!!

There are probably three of my images that have stood the test of time:

The Transcontinental

Bath Night

and of course,

The Mechanic

Thanks for answering..and I can see why..

Do you regularly review your folio here ?

I’ve not been shooting long (9 months) – so cannot really answer my own question re: time… but I’ll put up a couple from a few months ago that people go back to regularly..

my lightning shots will stay, the rest of my work? depends on what i start putting up and if i feel like wiping old work from my portfolio(few have gone already)

I certainly wade through fairly regularly … as soon as I look at something and go “What was I thinking???” it goes – or if it hasn’t many views or favouritings – it goes.

what would you classify as not many views/favourites?

Caroline Gorka Caroline Gorka 583 posts

I have thought more and more…’what was I thinking???’
The first things that went today were the 3 SC images…. jeez..I don’t even use PS now

Mine is a mixed bag.

My most viewed are:

These were shot from less than 2 months ago to nearly 2 years ago.

I think what we like changes over time, and possibly our sensibilities and self examination toward our own work becomes more sophisticated.

I go through my pf on a regular basis, I like to try and keep it to no more than 4 pages, my thinking being that no-one is going to want to wade through pages and pages of what often amounts to what-was-I-thinking crap. I can’t quite bring myself to delete work altogether, I just hide it (sorry RB servers ;)

These three have stood the test of time through all my many cullings…

Absolutely agree with both what Shaun and Rhana have said also.

I’m actually wondering whether those who don’t cull, as time and/or their work progresses (delete as applicable) really ever go back to earlier work to self-critique.

Hard to put an exact number on it Drec … just a feeling….

Not only do I go through my gallery and delete images I think don’t belong anymore I also change up the order of them. When someone looks at your ProFile page they automatically see 9 of your images. These are usually the last 9 you uploaded.

I change the these around and will change out all 9 sometimes. Does this work?

For sure it works some people do not go any more then your Profile page and some will only go a few pages deep into your gallery

As for standing the test of time here are a few that work for me

Wither just recently hit over 7,500 views

Fury of the Fallen – This is hanging in a show in a local gallery. I just sold a print of it for $200

My Little Demon – One of my personel favs!

Drec – I guess I classify as not many views / favs compared to other works in my gallery.

Of course non of us have any idea how many views / favs anyone else’s images have.

The Most Popular Tabs , as best as I can tell, show the ones with the most favs/ sales combined. There is some secret formula to this only known to top RB insiders.

I have to admit, I go more on what I like these days … the 3 I put up DO have lots of comments/faves, as do a couple of others compared to some.
Having said that, I just deleted a couple with lots of comments/faves …simply because I don’t like them now, and don’t feel they do anything for my folio as it stands/what I’m about now..

Every month I went through and deleted those newer images that didn’t get many comments or views, and it’s a bit static at the moment until I figure out a new way to upload pics.
My sunset through trees is very popular, though.

I think I’m overdue for some quality control in my portfolio.

I did recently look back on some of the first shots I took. At the time I thought they were the Mutt’s nuts, but I now instantly delete shots of the same quality.

this one will always remain, my first time shooting this, trying to cope with the lights and kit lens on my old 350d(taken 1st june 2007)
On the Ropes, i did think of Determination for a title

i went through recently and culled off all the work i wasn’t happy with, including either most or all of my journal entries

tiny, quality galleries > mediocre behemoths

last week I deleted over 200 images on RB, I now have only two images in my folio.
I was tiered of looking at them and hiding them so I sent them packing and put them back into storage. It feels great to delete them all and have bugger all in your folio.
I had about 10 images that really stood out over the rest and were my popular ones, but they are now gone. When I was deleting them I didn’t even think about what I was doing at the time. It took ages to do, but I think it was worth it.

It’s a pretty slow job building up a portfolio of drawings and paintings, so I haven’t deleted more than half a dozen since I joined RB in March this year. You photographers just have it too easy. ;-)

Great topic! I suggest hiding absolutely ALL of one’s portfolio and then starting from scratch at least once every year! (wink)

Caroline Gorka Caroline Gorka 583 posts

Mundy … my ‘problem’ is that I’ve only been shooting 9 months …and already have got fed up with so much my earlier stuff.
Maybe I should do it every 6 months for a couple of years :D

hahaha – not with the darkroom and photoshop stuff – some of it takes forever! But you’re right – alot of the time it only takes 1/250 of a second! I try to cull my stuff on a regular basis cuz I don’t like having more than 6 pages of crap. I think most people don’t even like going through two pages of stuff.
