Making a "Fan Page" - it helps sales!

Robyn Taylor Robyn Taylor 204 posts

A fun way to improve your sales and also get more feedback from your customers is to have a “Fan Page” on Facebook.

If you are not already a member of Facebook I recomend that you join. You don’t have to release personal information if you don’t want to, you can choose a format that keeps you private but just markets your work – the “Fan Page”. You could even cajole a friend who is already on there to make one for you!

Before I go any further explaining, take a look at my Bloomin’ Arty Fan Page
Click the “Become a Fan” button, if you are a Facebook member, and you will be able to follow the updates and various other tools I use to market my commercial work. (You can also then be eligible for Thankyou Gifts when I give them away! ;) )

A surprisingly successful thing that we did was launch our new Fan Page on Facebook with an actual “cyber party”. Matt Mawson and I invited friends by making an event and on the dot at 9pm we sat at our computers and had a virtual party. I was alone in my studio, with real bubbley and crackers, and other people were where-ever (USA, UK, etc). It went for 2 and a half hours! I was rushed off my keyboard replying to comments and chatting in the numerous open chat windows. It was amazing fun and completely unexpected as to the actual participation. We even made a sale! :)

You can follow some of the event at the site if you scroll down to the bottom of the wall

I would recommend some changes to how I worded and organised the event, in order to improve it, but the party went well anyway. :)

I would also recommend that all RB’s have a Facebook Fan Page, and that we all support each other to build up our Fan Bases.

Have a good day!

Yeah, the fan page is a great way to reach out to people and have new people get exposed to tour work.

I’ve used mine to feature the work of other artist from RB, just to keep people interested and give them something to look at other than my work….it also helps to establish an RB presence on FB. People keep seeing these artists featured and links back to RB and hopefully look around while they’re here. I also feature performing artists who are friends of mine and have shows to promote, organizations that I am connected, etc.

There area number of people on RB who have fan pages and it is a great marketing tool when people join as fans of each others pages. It seems to generate a lot more exposure to people who are not RB members.

That is very nice of you to promote other RB artists. You are very generous. I promote Matt Mawson. I have made an arrangement with him that he can have a bubblesite uner the Bloomin’ Arty name. He makes all the sales and profist from it ofcourse. But he also gets the extra marketing exposure too.

I have become your fan. :)

Good to see others are working on facebook pages. I’ve had one for a bit but only got serious promoting it recently. I’ll go ahead and share mine, too. I checked out everyone on the thread so far’s facebook pages and fanned you. :-)

This is a great way to build fans … by being each other’s fans. Thanks guys. Well, I just had to tell you, I have also made some fans some other way … is it cheating, I don’t know, but it has worked. I have just started using FaceBook ads to encourage more fans. I received 19 more fans in one day and paid a little over $1 each for them. This is not as silly as it sounds. Each fan is a genuine prospect as they have chosen to join, unlike all those friends that I have cajoled into joining. So, I am hopeful that if I work this Page properly I can get a sale … I’ll tell you if that happens!!!!

I was wondering if the ads actually do work. Had considered doing one.
I did become a fan of your page, Robyn, and will do the same with others that post on this thread. It really does end up benefitting everyone involved by getting each person’s page more out there to be seen.

My promoting other artists is partly being nice :-) I like to help promote artists whose work I admire. It’s also a good way to keep people interested. They get to see a variety of art, hear about performers who are friends of mine that may interest them and it helps to keep my page filled with fresh content. I’m hoping it also helps draw people to RB and makes RB more of a presence on FB.
Working cooperatively with a community fo artists can only help all involved.

Hey.
I also joined facebook and I´m very new (also here on RB) and I have a question about “creating a fan page”.
Which category should I state? I don´t know whether it´s local (I don´t think this is the right category), brand/product, or artist, band etc.?
Could someone give me a few tips for creating a fan page – what do I have to consider etc.
Would be great : )
Regards
Lacerda

@Dan Perez. Good for you Dan. Did you know that there is an RB group called “Promote Each Other”. It is invite only, but they are looking for fresh faces if you want to ask the host to join. Ask Adriana, she let me join :)

And, good news on the FB advertising, I have now 100 fans! I started with 65. The cost has gone down actually. I think it is well worth it, they are already intereacting with my page.

@Lacerda, Hiya. It depends what you are selling. I think I made my page ‘Retail’. If you are specialising as an individual artist then I would choose that. My site is commercial that’s why I have chosen retail type category. Hope this helps.

@Dan, yes if you want to join the “Promote Each Other” group, just ask Adriana or me for an invite. Anyone actively promoting RBers outside RB is welcome!

Facebook advertising has been interesting. Picking the keywords, tweaking them, etc. I’m sure the person who approves the ads knows my name by now! LOL

I let it go wild price wise for a couple of days (after I noticed weekends, more clicks seemed to actually become fans – not sure why or if maybe I just found the secret sauce of keywords for my art). But now I’m seriously ratcheting back on the ad budget and want to try other routes for finding fans. May not be as fast, but hoping for more engaged fans and to see how much organic growth I can get from interacting with the existing fans.

Always interested in hearing what others find works (if they are willing to share!). :-)

I have found FB ads to be so fascinating, I keep on looking at my Admanager, collecting stats etc. I have been pretty happy with it. It has still cost around $1 per fan. The potential of keywords is awesome. I found keywords such as “buying online” “shopping” giving gifts" “surfing the net”. All indicators that the people who see the ad may actually be interested in buying online products. My CTR is .11. I would lov eto know your stats if you have some. !!

Mark Tisdale Mark Tisdale 140 posts

Darn, on the deleted ads, it doesn’t show the CTR… So, I’m not really sure anymore. The only functional ad I have right now (which has a really low daily budget) has a CTR of .11.

I used “buying gifts” but I don’t think I used the others you suggested. Here are a couple you might try if you are looking for shoppers – paraphrased but I know they were something like ‘decorating our new home’ and ‘decorating my new home’ I can’t promise those particular ones are performers but I did use them. My earlier ads were a jumble of dissimilar words. My later ones I started grouping the same ideas together so that I had a better idea of what was working! I did say they were probably sick of new ads for me (sick to their wallets!).

I think I was in the neighborhood of $1 per fan, too, but I didn’t do anything precise enough to really track it. I had some organic growth at the same time, i.e. friends of friends and friends of fans happening as well after awhile I stopped trying to figure out how many new fans I was really getting from which source.

I have joined Facebook a couple of weeks ago to promote my art and photography as well (although there is never enough hours to do everything that needs doing! I Would really appreciate some return fans so I can get that magical 100 fan short url;)

So far I’ve done pretty well without the ads. I get a lot of people who I assume are friends of friends or friends of fans, but I will be looking into the ads a bit more.

The promotion group on RB is a nice idea but I’ve never been one to participate in something that has rules around promoting other people. I like to choose the artists whose work does something for me and whom I think my friends would enjoy. Will definitely explore it a bit more before though. Maybe it works differently than some other, similar types of promotional groups I’ve seen in the past.

@ Robyn: Well, is there a difference between a commercial page and a non-commercial page? I mean do I have to pay if I have a commercial site? I think not or do I err?

I want to create a fanpage to promote my art and to link to my “shop” here on redbubble. Sorry for the dumb questions but I´m a very “careful” person or I try to be at least.

Robyn Taylor Robyn Taylor 204 posts

@Lacerda: There is no cost to have a commercial page. The Fan Page is in effect a commercial page really, as most Fan Pages are used for selling something. You can set them up for free as an outshoot of your personal page, and no one will know that it is linked to you. In fact that is one draw back, fans can not send inmail to a fan page as they do not know who the admins are. However, they can make comments and write on the wall so you can get in touch with them via their FB profiles.

If you have a look at my Fan Page, you will see in the “info” tab is where I have the link to my bubblesite ‘shop’. The wall is where I intereact with the fans (customers) in the way that you would if you had a real world retail store. Then each day you can add a link to your work on teh wall yourself.

Ask as much as you like, this is a new thing for me too, we are all learning. I bought 3 books off amazon last night about FB and online marketing.

:D

@Mark: You have heaps of fans Mark so whatever you are doing is spot on. I have just scheduled another ad, this time I have changed it a little and put in some of the keywords you suggested. I am running it over this weekend, I think you said that helps. I will be interested to see if this slightly different ad gets a better CTR or not.

Lacerda Lacerda 16 posts

Ok then I will set up my fanpage right now : ) Thanks so much for the advice Robyn! And good luck with you fanpage and online marketing.

Thanks Lacerda, I have spotted you on my page!! You happened to join up just when there was a frenzy of fans going nuts about Teddy Bears! Looks like I am gonna have to take some more Teddy Bear photos …. one fan apparently has 2000!!!!!

I’ve had a facebook page for about a year but it didn’t do much. I only had 36 fans until this thread started and I decided to re-run the same Facebook Ad I ran for a week with little response when I first created the page.

I’ve now more than doubled my fan base in two days and they are all presumably people who are interested in painting rather than friends I said to “If you don’t become a fan, I won’t be your friend anymore.”

Oh and two people have already enquired about commissioning an oil portrait painting.

…and I became a fan of South West Photography
