G’day KIM!

Good to see you embracing RAW. You can’t beat the science behind it to obtain the best quality.

What camera are you using?

The software that comes with Canon will handle Raw (DPP – I think it’s called)

If you are using Photoshop …. you can download Adobe’s DNG converter for free- this will convert the RAW file into a DNG (digital negative) file, without loss of data, which Photoshop and other programs can then read.
Then a good “quick processor” of the DNG file (ie: what is normally referred to as RAW processing) is Adobe Bridge – comes standard with CS4 and CS3 – not sure about earlier versions.
If you have a Canon – the Canon conversion software is way to slow and combersome. Not sure about Nikon’s own software.

Hi dennis/drec/everyone

I use a canon, and I confess to not having put the software on my computer yet. I have been told today that the disks I got with the camera is good so I best start there.

I use a 450D.

AND I LOVE IT

thanks folks for the help.

Kim,

Yep, the Canon software is a good start.

Have a look at The GIMP too for a free but competent image manipulation program. Last I looked though it will not process RAW or 16 bit images, so export out of the Canon program an 8 bit TIFF to use in The GIMP.

A modification to the interface to emulate Photoshop that is quite popular.

The last time I used gimpshop it would load work for a little while then crash my PC several times then work again then crash then it got uninstalled.,..

There is a plug-in for Gimp that supports Raw images but I have not been able to get it to work on my PC’s running XP….
So I just use the software that came with my Cannon 450D and have done just fine with that…..

The Unidentified Flying Raw (UFRaw) is a utility to read and manipulate raw images from digital cameras. It can be used on its own or as a Gimp plug-in.
