help .png in Illustrator without cropping

Although I’ve done it many a time in the past I just can’t get it to work now. I’ve made a t-shirt design in Illustrator, it’s all the correct size, I export it as a .png as required but because I require a transparent background it keeps cropping the page size down to the size of the design. I’m about to have some kind on brain spasm, can someone please help me.

Preset [choose file type]
[untick clip to artboard]
apply

I’m not able to save-as png files from Illustrator—only from Photoshop. SO I end up doing a design in illustrator, then bringing it into p-shop so as to save as png.

Plus, turned off layers in photoshop magically reappear in the saved-as png file. So I end up with 2 or 3 files for one design. [Using Ill/PShop CS 4, mac].

Hi – hopefully my illustrator template should help (you don’t necessarily need the template itself), but take a look at the instructions in the journal entry, as you can do ‘save for web’ and get the right size by ‘clipping’ to the artboard without having to go to Photoshop.
