How to Put photos and links into your Descriptions, A Comment Box or a BubbleMail etc

There is a lot of info around about how to do this, but tracking it down can be hard. So, as I’ve been asked quite a few times in the last few days about how to do this, I thought I would try and gather mine, and others’ info together.

The idea of featuring other Bubblers was kicked off as an idea by Paul Louis Villani respect to Paul.

the way to do it is as follows:

There are some little bits of ‘code’ that you need to use and put into the description box. I’ll use LIVERPOOL MARKET NIGHT as an example.

Part 1a – the bit of text – Can I recommend GothGirl’s great portfolio
NOTE: this text can be whatever you want it to be.

Part 2a – the web address of the page you want to link to using this text – http://www.redbubble.com/people/gothgirl
NOTE: this is the public view web address of the person

Part 3a – web address of the person’s I.D. picture – http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/users/size:135×135/view:avatar/gothgirl-3.jpg
NOTE: to get this, go to the public page of the person, right-click their I.D. photo, left-click properties, and then you can left-click-hold and highlight the actual web address of their I.D. photo and COPY it and the PASTE it.

Part 4a – and finally, if you want to make the picture a clickable link as well, which is nice, you repeat the web address of the page you want to link to – http://www.redbubble.com/people/gothgirl

joining it all together

You don’t use conventional HTML tags to make it all work. Instead you use DOUBLE SPEECH MARKS ( ” ) , COLONS ( : ) and EXCLAMATION MARKS ( ! ) and – NO SPACES anywhere.

important: I have to use SPACES to let you see what is going on

Part 1b – ” Can I recommend GothGirl’s great portfolio ” :

Part 2b – right after the COLON you need – http://www.redbubble.com/people/gothgirl

NOTE: this turns the text into a clickable link (if you only want a text link, you need do no more)

NOTE: for the adventurous, you can press ENTER-SPACE-ENTER at this point and it will make a blank line between the test link and the picture, which looks nicer. If you are not adventurous, don’t worry.

Part 3b – ! http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/users/size:135×135/view:avatar/gothgirl-3.jpg !
NOTE: this puts the picture in place on the page.

Part 4b – and finally, add another COLON to make the picture clickable –
: http://www.redbubble.com/people/gothgirl

Voila – it all looks like this and it is this that you put into the description box

It should result in something like this

Can I recommend GothGirl’s great portfolio

And the adventurous version…..

Can I recommend GothGirl’s great portfolio

It all works in comment boxes, Journals or in Bubblemails as well.

Use 1b & 2b, for a clickable link only

Use 3b on its own for just inserting a picture

Use 3b + 4b to make that picture clickable

REALLY IMPORTANT BIT: if you want to display a picture in selling mode (i.e. framed or as a card etc) you must get the image properties from the public view pages, or it won’t work.

There is more information on all this here

and more here

and a CheatSheet here

and StacyLee’s here

and it’s worth going to The Learning Centre as well

Hope this helps. Any questions, do ask.

I am sorry I’m such a techno idiot but this didn’t work for me. I am trying to put a photo of a framed/matted image into my description box so Redbubble viewers can see what my image looks like in a frame. I put exclamation/Url/exclamation. But when I saved the changes the image didn’t show up. I am trying to get the image off of Photo.net where I am also a member. What am I doing wrong?

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

did you use the ”/” as you have above? don’t use the / ...

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

No – I just used that to show you I followed the instructions to put an exclamation then the URL then another exclamation. I didn’t use any spaces.

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

if you put the url directly into the browser address bar, does it work to take you to the image? it should. (remember is the url of the image not the page it’s on that you should be using)

Make sure to take the correct URL. Any image should end in .jpg. Do not use the URL at the top of the browser. Just right click on the actual image, and copy the “image location” (might be in the properties). That should sort things out. :)

Edit: D’Oh! Beaten to the post by Sara….

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Yes – if I put the Url into the browser bar it does take me to the image. Yes I opened the image, clicked properties and took the Url right of the image.. which did end in .jpg. I just tried it again and it still didn’t work. Am I saving the wrong way?

David Librach - DL Photography David Librach ... 1215 posts

Well, sounds like you are grabbing the correct URL. You mentioned something about Photo.net. Is this image coming from there? I’m a bit confused as to exactly where you are trying to post this image and where it is originating from. Care to expand?

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

not sure how you’re saving, so that’s hard to say :)

Can you give me the url you’re trying to use? Maybe it’s some sort of authority problem?

Jan why dont you upload the photo from photo.net onto here. You can make it private if you like but it will still show if you copy the url as David has advised.

http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6748802-lg.jpg This is the Url. I am a member of Photo.Net and I am trying to put this “framed” version of COLD into my description of the same image here on Redbubble. There are other images I would like to also do this with so I would really love to know how to do this.

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

Here’s one of your RB images here (hope you don’t mind)

I used the !! with the following url in it (from the buy/preview page)

http://images-3.redbubble.com/img/art/framecolor:black/framestyle:flat30/mattecolor:off%20white/product:framed-print/size:small/view:preview/478539-1-circus-tricks.jpg

It seems to work – you must have an error with the syntax

copy this exactly, then remove the spaces

make sure there are no spaces

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Tracy I must have been responding at the same time you were. I do not understand what you are saying. I have already uploaded COLD into my folio. But now I want to show a framed version of it on the same page.

skunk skunk 2203 posts

lol do as above Jan

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Okay I did just as Sara said. I copied her URL and removed the spaces between the exclamation points and URL. What am I doing wrong that it doesn’t work for me? I go into my picture COLD, I click EDIT, I paste the Url into the description box, then I “save changes”. It doesn’t work. I feel like such an idiot. I hate to bother you any further but it just isn’t working for me. I even left the page and came back again to see if it was there. Nothing.

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

Just wondering Jan – wouldn’t it be better to show the RedBubble framed version? So the potential buyer doesn’t get confused by not having the frame you’re showing when they get to the buy/preview screen.

skunk skunk 2203 posts

It is there Jan but its HUGE!!!

David Librach - DL Photography David Librach ... 1215 posts

Looks like you got it to work on your image. Change the “-lg.jpg” to “-sm.jpg” so that it is a bit smaller and fits better. :)

Also, as Sara mentioned, try the RB one.

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Sara – Yes! But I didn’t know I could do that either. So do I go into the image, click to buy it, put a frame on it and then copy that URL?

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Tracey – I can’t see it! If it’s that huge, How do I delete it then? (if I can ever see it in order to delete it!)

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

Yep – just go into the buy screen, set the mat and frame the way you want to show it, and right click and take that url. :)

You’ll get an image that’s much more nicely sized :) Will work well for this image, since it’s portrait, but the landscape ones are a bit too wide for the description area unfortunately. I’ve started resizing and saving them off the bubble, but it’s a heck of a lot of trouble…

Jan Piller Jan Piller 4367 posts

Oh Doh!!! I had to go into “public view” to see it! I am sorry folks! (although I did warn you I was a techno-idiot!!) Hmmm… so I will try to do it with a Redbubble frame instead. Stay tuned!! I may be back!

Sara Lamond Sara Lamond 2413 posts

Jan, you have no idea how much I struggled getting these images posted when I joined redbubble, and I am not a techno idiot, lol.

Don’t feel bad :)
