Can a bit of writing be to truthful?

I put up a writing of something I did when I was younger and showed my sister. My sister says that it is just to truthful and not something people want to know about.

Is there such a thing as too truthful?

if it pushes someone’s boundaries in some way, then it is good.

Too truthful? no such thing. Go for it!

Thanks Byron I really didn’t think it would cause a drama on here at all but after what my sister said it made me think that maybe I could be putting something up that is just not for others to read as it is just too much for them… If you know what I mean

It’s quite likely your sister can’t cope with that particular piece of writing – for whatever reasons – and she doesn’t want others to think of her in that way (or not, whatever the case may be) when that may not occur.

As long as you’re not revealing real identities and it fits well as a story (strong, consistent plot, well developed characters etc) it’s all good. You’ll find people want to read stories that have truth to them as it’s something they can relate to quite easily. Take a look at Maeve Binchy’s writing. It has a lot of real life truth mixed in with the fictional story.

Melissa,

Listen to me closely… there is no such thing as too much truth, truth is static and is what it is. If you write something with the intent, knowingly or not, being shock-value, then you have lost the truth to fiction, and if you present it as such you are (for lack of milder term) a liar. If, however, the truth is simply so “severe” as to elicit in others discomfort, well, that’s their problem, not yours. Indeed, if you can make someone uncomfortable with what you have written in truth, it is evidence of great skill.

What was written was something a councilor had requested I write to help me through much to my disgust this woman had never been in the position I was in and I stopped seeing her but she had handed this over to DOCS and they had filed it. When I fell pregnant with my first baby, I requested a copy of my file as I do not remember much of my child hood (for good reason I suppose) but after going through another section of the file I found what I had written and thought it was great, even though it is a sad thing.

Maybe my sister feels bad when she hears of it as she wasn’t around to protect us, not to sure. But thought I would ask the question, as I don’t want people to be bothered by the subject.

Sometimes I write from life, sometimes I write from imagination. I just don’t tell people which ones are real and which ones are not.

Jo that would be great if I could actually write LOL although most of my writings/poetry was done in my younger years and now after 3 kids the brain is kinda fried LOL.

On the other hand I think people would know my writing in question would be real.

Fuck them all, I reckon.
Use names, dates, phone numbers and addresses if you want.
Hell, print the thing and put it in 10,000 letterboxes.
If anyone is ashamed of anything you’ve written, they should have thought harder before they allowed you that perspective…

If you hadn’t told us that it was true we wouldn’t of known and just thought it was an insightful peice of great writing. I think it scares your sister to know that you are posting something which is personal and truthful, but thats only because she knows that it is true…but I guess now we do to …
