Stephen Mitchell (aka stephentrepreneur), Adelaide, Australia Photographer My first camera in the early 1980’s was a polaroid that held 12 film and measured 12cm in every direction. Holding it aloft was as impressive as the photograph it produced. More often they simply failed to work. My next camera was a classic instamatic . This could be held between the forefinger and thumb of each finger. Every other finger managed to cover the lens at some point. Yet I still managed to find the joy of capturing an image. By the mid-to-late 1980’s, I’d progressed to an SLR. No, I cannot recall the brand. I do remember having a short standard lens and a massive zoom lens. In the late 1980’s I shot about 200 photographs at the Adelaide Grand Prix. This included pushing the barrier open with a hundred other energetic people, running down pit-straight with the last car on its final-lap – and shooting sides of faces of smiling race-drivers, champagne bottles and lots of spectators! (I really must find and scan those negatives!) But like most lovers of photography, the cost of film-development made this hobby prohibitive. Between jobs and strapped for cash, I re-pawned all my camera gear (to the same shop I got it from!) and returned to searching the job-market after the ‘recession we had to have’. Then the new millennium began. I was newly married. We wanted to go “OS(Over Seas)”. The Northern Territory (‘99), Canberra & Queensland (‘00), and New Zealand (‘01). For 600 dollars, we purchased the cheapest thing on the market: A Canon EOS 500D. With 30×36f rolls, a whole lotta luck and great weather, we managed to shoot some amazing photography in New Zealand. In 2003, just before a family wedding, the Digital-Era hit the Australian market. Again, we purchased the cheapest yet most compact digital camera, a Canon IXUS v2 dSLR. I shot an amazing array of photographs (from weddings to macros) with this versatile camera … until February 2007. Early this year my wife and I caught the camera-but with a vengeance. Funds became available (lots of scrimping and saving) and we purchased one Canon EOS400D dSLR. Within a month, we had to purchase a second camera to save our marriage (kidding!) because we kept fighting to use the camera. My wife and I are now passionate photographers, fully equipped, again. At least three times a year we visit Kangaroo Island to shoot interesting farms, beaches, landscapes and portrait photography. That’s my story in a nutshell. |

Hello! I’ve been on RB a few weeks and am just finding my way around! I’m a painter by night (and most weekends) and graphicd designer by day. I’m organising a group show in Sydney for June 2008 and am looking for artists to participate, see below: WANTED Artists for group show in Sydney Juen 2008. The loosely based theme for the show is colour and how we each express ourselves in different ways through different media using colour. I’m still on the look out for sculptural pieces, ceramic and textiles so PLEASE spread the word. If anyone is interested in participating please either comment on one of my journals so I can check out for RB profilee or email me 5 low res jpegs of your strongest work to studio@adrianaowens.com telling me why you have picked them. Thanks! |
