THE SUBJECT: / Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, this hard working veteran Ironman contestant is Christian DuJardin from New Caledonia, aged 58. / A member of my camera club is a registered nurse of many years experience and when she saw this photograph noted that going by the large veins standing out so prominently from his neck that Christian’s heart must have been working like a jack hammer. I can assure you that this must be true as I heard his very laboured breathing as he passed only about a metre (3ft) away from me. / I don’t know where or if Christian was placed in his class but I hope he did well. He certainly deserves it! THE LOCATION: / Photographed in the CBD of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a rather dull grey and damp day. THE MAKING OF ‘Toughing it Out’: / Due to the lighting conditions and the restrictions of my camera I was having one heckuva time juggling shutter speeds, apertures and ISO as well as my panning technique to get the sort of shot I was after. / I saw Christian approaching from a fair distance and readied myself for the shot only to find I could not get back any further because of the crowd behind me so this was a very cramped panned photograph. Regardless of all that I was fairly pleased with the result. / The image almost ended up in the virtual rubbish bin as I was extremely disappointed with the softness of the man’s face. Fortunately however, I slept on it and when I awoke I decided against trashing it because I just could not bring myself to throw that haunting face away. A case of ‘do all photgraphs have to be sharp?’ / The Judge of my camera club’s digital competition thought well enough of it to award the shot a Credit so I feel I sure did the right thing. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/100sec, ISO400, Continuous focus, Panning hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. Taken from the Geelong Tour Cycling Event. This particular shot was taken near the enterance to the Geelong Botanical Gardens. / Great Geelong weather today made for great light for the / photos. ... it amazes me how rude we can all be at times. Today whilst at this event, I was witness to some rude and aweful behavior directed toward volunteer officials for this event! Some people were most put off that they could not drive their cars along the road beside the East Geelong Golf Course and around the Botanical Gardens. That fact that a racing event was on, meant nothing, and the way the officials were spoken to, it was embarrasing, in the end Police on motorcycles had to come in and sort out those that were making public arses of themselves!... THE SUBJECT: / No.1244 was one of the many female participants in the 2008 Panthers Ironman Triathlon and was just into her 2nd lap of the cycling stage. / The title is a particular move in the game of Chess. THE LOCATION: / At the top of William Street in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘En Passant’: / The day was dull, the light fluctuated from poor to poorer and while the exposure would be spot on for the contestants, the sky and very bright things were blown out. This is why I processed the RAW photograph for a B&W conversion in Photoshop CS and am very happy with the result. / I am especially taken by the action blur of the opposite cyclists made by my panning the camera. / Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/200sec @ f/4.5, ISO80, Hand held. / S7RAW and Photoshop CS. Visit the Sport & Leisure collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more two wheeled iron action. UPDATE: 6-2-09 / On the advice of a Federation of Camera Clubs NSW accredited judge I have removed a distracting blurred pedestrian from the image’s top right corner. I must admit it made an improvement. UPDATE: 10-2-09 / This mighty Ironwoman was awarded a Merit Certificate in the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s January 2009 Open Competition in the Large Monochrome Print section. image taken at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome this past summer…. These racers ride at warp speed tightly packed. Didn’t want to stop the action, it just wouldn’t show the speed. Canon Xti, shutter speed 1/13sec, aperture priority, f/5.6, 400iso, focal length 105mm
I used Photoshop to assemble this collage from some of my favorite cycling images.

If you have had the pleasure of capturing Professional Bicycling Road races, this site is for you!
If you have watched the 2001 Tour De France battle on Alpe d’Huez between Armstrong and Ulrich more than five times, If you watch Versus 3 times a day during the 1st three weeks of July, if cyclingnews.com is your homepage ( after Redbubble of course). This IS the group for you.
We started this group to gather amateur photographers that are lucky enough to be in the position to capture bicycle racing at it’s finest. The Tour Down Under, the Giro d’talia, the Spring Classics, the Tour of California. and the mother- of -all races, “THE T.D.F.” as well as those road races that are close to home... There are races with pro’s as well as those moving up to the pro ranks and they could be racing in the next town.....What great photo opportunities those make!
MOST IMPORTANTLY. This group was started for those of us out there that are addicted to the sport of road biking, whether it’s watching races on the television or traveling great distances to watch professional bicycle racing up close and in person or even participating in them yourself!
I’ve seen your photography on Redbubble. Bring it home to the Pro-Peloton Photographers group.
Thanks.
