There is much of Monserrate that remains a mystery. I spent a good deal of time researching the history of this place, the centerpiece of which is the lovely, immaculate Palace of Love, itself. Decorated in a Moorish style so distant from traditional Portuguese architecture of the time, Monserrate became a world symbol of romance when it was included in the Gulliver’s Travels Remake in 1996. None of this commentary is unique to this artist or author. What is unique, however is the visit I made to Monserrate Palace and Park. There is so much romance that surrounds the Palace, it would be both an injustice and inglorious to describe it in ubiquitous terms. Such a fanciful place, fairly demands the fantasy of romance to be written. One could imagine so much within the gardens, paths, interiors and history, flowing gown, starched collars, buckled shoes and golden slippers, that I felt inimitably drawn to imagine such a twist of fate, a story that would excite your imagination, from exposing my own fanciful imagination to you, my faithful readers. I beg your indulgence: THE WRITTEN WORK HERE IS NOT FOR CHILDREN, IT IS AN ADULT DEPICTION…... I could feel her in the air, as I turned the corner of the hall, / Her presence, somewhere in this grand building, / A pretty ghost, a sense of mystic eyes, behind an imaginary fog, / Oh yes, she was here somewhere, and I meant to find her. / Even then the hint of luxury heightened my senses , / This…was different, / The perfume entering my lungs, / A bit of spice, hinting of cinnamin / Chased by vanilla….no, couldn’t be, / Maybe cocanut?..... no…..! / It was something out of my experience……and I was getting distracted, / Fragrance……lingering in the air in this place, / Already I had images, expectations, arousal. / I slowed, as neared the door, Dragging my heels, / Inhaling, Pressure, No! Yes! / Just……… tantalizing traces. / I closed my eyes, / Trying to concentrate, shaking my head, / What must this be, this woman with such mystery, / Sniffing, again, confused, alert, / Determined, I will find her, even if I cannot…….. / Was I going quietly mad? / Then…… remembering, / This is the Palace of Monserrate… / Oh, yes, perhaps Portugal’s most famous garden of delight / There she was………………. / Level gaze, serene, that hat. / Even the hat thrilled me, / But those eyes. / Could a woman look any more sensuous? / She was adorned in a silk dress that simply flowed with her every move. / Nothing low cut or slit up to there, / Just simply….a lovely apparition, a vision, there in the afternoon sun, / I’d lost myself in those clear eyes. / She smiled, as if knowing my disconcerted mind. / Women are good at that…..smiling, and you never know. / Perhaps they know, but you don’t. / A man can kiss and embrace a woman….making passionate love to her…. / And never know. Never know. / Questions…….no answers. / I’d found her….now what? / I took a step toward her, heart pounding, body alive, so very alive. / Another, and she stayed. She moved not one centimeter. / The last step….she’s in my arms, mouths wildly searching each other, / Lips, tongue and teeth a confused tangle inside out. / I felt the oxygen going out of my chest, my skin quivering, / Inhaling this woman, as if I would take her very air into my lungs, / Feeling the rise and fall of her swollen breasts as we both gasped for air, / Locked in feverish embrace. / Dizzy from the suddenness of the passion, / Thoughts only of never letting go, / The wraith so firmly against my body, / Writhing not in agony, / Unless the restraint of clothing were to be considered, / Manacles upon our skin, / But writhing in passion. / Swollen, pliant, eager. / Could ecstasy take on any more rapturous form? / Could any two people be more turned inside out? / Could skin be more frenzied or heated? / Panting, exerting physically to match the oneness of mind and spirit, / Explosive, moaning release and clutching embrace. / All is still, but not quiet, / Fulfilled, yet not satisfied, / The sun crept across our faces, / Our eyes searching each others, / Questions answered wordlessly, / Smiles amid the afterglow, / Still touching, still embracing, / I kissed her again, more gently, / Nose, forehead, and finally, one more time, those wonderful lips. I hope you have enjoyed this creation. As a writer, I’ve approached many subjects. / I’m not the first and I won’t certainly, be the last, to describe a tryst. I’ve traveled most of the west, and this site can hardly be matched, much less exceeded. You’ll be hard put to find a more elegant setting than Monserrate Palace, one of the most romantic places in the world. I also envision you, my readers, creating your own romance at Monserrate, in a country that is filled with all flavors of the heady substance that Romance begets. Such a place is not just about human love, but romance of history, romance of view, romance of a country that is ancient in age, but youthful in presentation. Find Portugal and you will find the fountain of youth.
