Bidens Mitis is found growing in the rich soil around ponds and lakes. Alligator Lake, where this image was taken, in north Florida, Columbia County, at the edge of Lake City, has dried almost completely in the north end of the lake. Only a very small trickle of a stream still meanders from a few large ponds to the sink hole that swallowed all the rest of the water. Earlier in the year, the lake is filled with Yellow Lotus, in the fall, the Marsh Beggartick takes to the stage with a brighter yellow. it grows nearly 5 feet high, with most of the plants averaging three to 4 feet. each golden yellow blossom has eight petals, unless having lost one. the book says 8 to eleven petals, all i saw had eight. the bumble bees were everywhere going from flower to flower, along with the monarch butterfly’s, buckeyes, gulf fritillary, and one red admiral.
When go you outside the border of things and do things a little bit daring, Nature sometimes has the most wonderful suprises. Like when I stuck my head inside a Prikley Pear Blossum, this one very content Bumblebee had it all to himselve. I love Macro you get to see more of what you normally would not normally see with the naked eye. If you look closely you can see all the Bumblebees apendages and the pollen on him. He was so content he was blissfully unaware I was there with my camera, but I was not going to push my luck, took my photo and left him too his business. Photo taken bu Canon IXUS

It really looks as though that is a stream of Pollen this Bumble is sucking up-can’t believe my little compact has picked up so much detail- so not really sure what it is exactly! Anyway always good to see the bees around-enjoy! Wattle seems to be a particular favourite of the local bees… Lumix TZ11. Featured in Super Macro Photography and Plight of the Bumble Bee. Top ten (third) in Wattle Be the Challenge, Fabulous Flowers group.
Ok, well seems that I am victim of my own ignorance. I walked outside to watch my feeders and low and behold I found more than I bargained for. The africanized honey bees found the feeders and I managed to get a few shots off before more arrived. I did purchase bee guard but they don’t fit this feeder. So I took the feeders down for a few days in hopes that I can put them out once they have moved on.

My budleia globosa was full of bees this year, but I wanted a more artistic view of the bumble bees (Bombus terrestris), rather than a simple natural history shot, which I have hundreds of. / So Ive cropped this into a square as I felt the angles of the 2 bees, with the one flying off would work.

This bees is so busy today. Sticking his nose deep into the lavender flower. To get to the pollen. Image taken in my front yard. Ten years ago two entomologists submitted an application to Environment Australia to introduce the European Bumble Bee, to the Australian mainland. They argued they will increase productivity in greenhouses by a quarter, reduce pesticide use and make a good back stop in case native bees are wiped out by varroa mite. Now, after years of study, public consultation and a long political process, our Minister for the Environment has knocked it back. He has looked at the import risk assessment for the bees and what happened in Tasmania where they were illegally introduced. He says introducing the Bumble Bee to the mainland is a bad idea and could open Australia up to more disease and weed threats. / I found this very interesting. People like to change things and think it will do good but iss it really good to introduce other species and change the life circle in an area?? /
On a bright, but cool, sunny day along the old dirt road through the Osceola National Forest, I came upon this stand of Symphyotrichum concolor swarming with honey bees, bumble bees, a few skippers, and a couple of wasps.

The group exist to promote the life and to show all that is good about the humble honey/bumble bee. They play a huge part in our lives with food production and keeping our visual life stimulated with pretty flowers to see feel and pick! – they deserve special recognition for all their hard work. Honey lovers everywhere should join.
