This shot of a steam pressure gauge was taken in the engine room of the sternwheeler (paddle steamer) S.S. Klondike, which is now a static tourist attraction in Whitehorse, capital of Canada’s Yukon. I actually had two cameras with me, with both my lenses, but chose to use the longer of the two lenses for this shot, because depth of field was so important to the way I visualised the image. The light wasn’t great. It was murky and raining, and this shot was taken in the mid-section of the interior of the historic vessel. That’s precisely why I shot it from side-on, rather than standing directly in front of it and obscuring what little light there was. The Klondike played a crucial part in transportation and re-supply during the gold rush and was a symbol of the subsequent prosperity in the province. I can only imagine how many crew members in the course of the vessel’s operational life must have trained their eyes on this gauge, to make sure their wood-burning ship was operating within the correct parameters. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K200D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F4.5, 1/90 sec, ISO 400, focal length 170mm. This State Hospital was established in its present location in 1901 as a farm colony for “chronic insane patients”. By 1945 the number of patients had risen to 1,730, with a total staff of 250 with 241 vacancies. By this time the institution had grown to 1,200 acres with buildings scattered widely over an area covering three towns. After 72 years of operation the Hospital was closed in 1973 as the first of a series of institutions to close in its state. The campus is now occupied by a University , a Job Corps Program, and various state agencies. Most structures have been renovated and altered for re-use, some have been demolished. A graveyard remains on a nearby hilltop with 1,041 numbered, nameless graves of persons who died in this institution. A handwritten list of their names survives in various archives. Taken with PentaxK100 D Super 18-55 lens…. Sold 2 prints so far! 1,484 views!!!! As of 11/16/09 1,500 Viewings!!!

It’s not often I take a shot in the focal length range of 18-25mm, but this is definitely one of those rare images! This was shot in the picturesque Victorian town of Nhill, in the Wimmera region of my home state, Victoria. I composed this so that the old bandstand, or rotunda, would be a mid-point between the striking red-brick paving and the clouds that dotted a hot December sky (yes, that’s our summer here!) Despite the clouds on the horizon, it’s interesting that the strength of the light can be gauged from the sharpness of the shadows thrown by the benches. It’s interesting to note that this broad, rectangular swathe of parkland literally sits between both sides of the Western Highway. Traffic heading towards Adelaide (South Australia) goes by on the left and vehicles heading back to Melbourne drive past on the right. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F13, 1/250, ISO 200, focal length 23mm. Adelaide3-6545
