“He was free to dance alone where the spirits run / His almond eyes would twinkle on a hundred sons / His champagne toast and white meat on a spit / Papa Legba’s drunken with a smile upon his lips” ~ verse from the song Hey Papa Legba by Elton John (1982) Papa Legba is the master linguist, the trickster, warrior, and the personal messenger of destiny. In Haitian Vodou, Papa Legba is the intermediary between the loa (the spirits of the Voodoo religion practiced in Haiti, and other parts of the world) and humanity. Papa Legba stands at a spiritual crossroads and gives (or denies) permission to speak with the spirits of Guinee (spirit world), and is believed to speak all human languages. Papa Legba is always the first and last spirit invoked in any ceremony, because his permission is needed for any communication between mortals and the loa—he opens and closes the doorway. ... in Benin and Nigeria, Papa Legba is viewed as young and virile, is often horned and phallic, and his shrine is usually located at the gate of the village in the countryside. ...” ~ This piece includes 3 photographs, the model (3d) and brushes, filters, and extensive processing in Photoshop. As with most of my work, the detail and overall result can only be appreciated in a much larger size than that available here on RB.

Many, many years ago, I remember reading a short story by Asimov (I think). It was about the development of a super high speed camera which was able to take the equivalent of many thousands of frames a second. For the trial, they decided to film a nuclear bomb test. The final paragraph, had all the generals and dignitaries sitting in a small theatre to watch the processed film slowed down to a normal 24 frames per second. The final line went something like . . . There was utter silence in the theatre and a palpable smell of fear, as there on the screen in front of them, was the smiling face of the devil . . . Please forgive any mistakes in the above, I can only remember reading the story once and that was many decades ago. However, the image of those words has always been with me . . . And last dance of Carmen and Jose begins… It was something really fascinating. Under enchanting singing and “mad” rhythmics of clapping they created their dance. Everything was there: seduction, passionate love, possession, pride, jealousy and even hatred… Carmen and Jose were dancing but I saw not a stage but a square in old city… Real Carmen telling Jose that she knew from omens that he was fated to kill her, but “Carmen will always be free,” and as she now hated herself for having loved him, she would never give in to him… Strike of the knife… blood on the stones… and last note of music… / Everything ended… empty stage and just broken rose on a floor like symbol of this tragic love… So… it’s is my last picture dedicated to great art of flamenco and passionate love story and I go forward to Seville, the city where Jose saw Carmen first time…
Pen and ink and some wierd European sized paper of Barbara’s (A4?) This is Barbara Glatzeder’s and my first attempt at an Exquisite Corpse / It was great fun and kind of like an intuitive activity. She started with the left half (the awesome big eye) than covered up what she did except for one inch and mailed it to me. I had to finish it off without knowing what she had done. When I was done and uncovered her work I realized I started with it upside down…lol. Somehow it still kind of works. / I am mailing her one that I started right now so we are going to give another go at it.

This is a true story. / This was a very vivid nightmare (or rather, one of my “dreamalities” as I have dubbed them, where the dream is real; a lucid dream in which both my subconscious and conscious came to the late-night party.) / anyway… / before the black-robed devil’s; the minions of The Black-maker (my also dubbed eveil step-father…who i could feel in the background, behind it all) dragged me into the portal of hell…those words came out of nowhere (and everyhwere) in my head… / and when I began reciting that prayer, the black robes writhed and screamed their way below the ground, dissipating in agony and defeat. / The Black-maker? he left pissed, I’m sure. / I woke up then; shaking like an earthquake, still speaking the end of the prayer. Outloud. / It was my own voice that woke me. / I will never forget that experience. I wrote 2 poems about this dream…this is one of them.
