About Ontario
Ontario is a province of Canada. It is Canada’s most populous province and home to the nation’s most populous city, Toronto, and the nation’s capital, Ottawa. The province is named after Lake Ontario, which is thought to have been derived from Ontarí:io, a Huron (Wyandot) word meaning “great lake”, or possibly skanadario which means “beautiful water” in the Iroquoian languages. Ontario contains about 250000 freshwater lakes.
Southern Ontario is well known for its attractions and tourism. Some popular tourist attractions include the CN Tower, Parliament Hill, Niagara Falls, National Gallery of Canada, Canada’s Wonderland, CNE, Canadian War Museum, Hockey Hall of Fame, Royal Canadian Mint, Marineland, The Rideau Canal, and the Royal Ontario Museum.
Niagara Falls is the 6th most visited tourist attraction by domestic and international tourists in the world, with over 14 million tourists each year. In 2006, Toronto was the 14th most visited city by international tourists in the world with over 4.1 million visitors in the year. Ottawa is the most visited city in Canada by domestic tourists, hosting over 6.9 million Canadian visitors per year. City of Hamilton is home to more than 100 waterfalls and cascades, most of which are on or near the Bruce Trail as it winds through the Niagara Escarpment. (source: Wikipedia)
