A specimen from my wife’s orchid house in Yungaburra, far north Queensland, Australia.
This orchid also grows in my garden.
She’s a hybrid orchid, and her name is Cymbidium Dolores Hoytex x Tom Thumb. It took me a while to really appreciate her but she has subtle charm. This image is part of my “Astonishing Orchids” calendar. Please visit my profile and take a look. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 105mm AF macro lens / Tripod
This orchid just makes me smile in the morning. It’s just a delight.
Another orchid – this one is called Cymbidium April showers Apricot nectar. / Rather gorgeous, I think. This image is part of my “Astonishing Orchids” calendar. Please visit my profile and take a look. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 105mm AF macro lens / tripod

So happy to see these in Belgrave South again… have been watching the spot and thought the owners had mown them! When I was photographing yesterday the owner walked over to have a chat and walked on several on his side of the fence! He thought the flowers looked pretty so hadn’t mowed them… he’s got no idea of what he has… and that is the only good stand of these on the whole SE side of Melbourne!!!! LOL, he promised to leave them for “about 4 weeks”.... arrrhhh!!! He has had a great little colony of Greenhoods by the look of it, they are finished now but there are heaps of “leaves” coming up all over his front nature strip… he says he doesn’t mow on the Courtney’s road side any more, the CFA use it as a “parking bay” during summer so there is hope for the ones there… / Not necessarily rare but very limited in this area Taken with my Lumix, as a farewell outing before being retired to my daughter… no more macro for it LOL
tree orchid
Nodding green hood orchid. A Winter flowering species that occurs throughout eastern NSW.
Often called a bridal veil orchid, this plant can have masses of flowers. / Seen growing on trees in swampy areas north of Sydney.
One of the many green hood orchids to grow west of Sydney.
Blossoms are 5-8 cm across, long lasting, and open at about the same time. Very fragrant / when in direct sunlight ,though fragrance rapidly disappears if the flowers are shaded.
This Orchid is from Ecuador. Ecuador is a tiny country but has over 4000 named Orchid species and more being described every year. With so many Orchids one would expect to find them everywhere. They are everywhere but finding them is very difficult. One reason is that a great number are tiny like this Stelis. The bush is thick and if you don’t know what you are looking for you never see them. We had an excellent guide without whom the trip would have been a bust. / I don’t like using any kind of a scale in plant photos but in this case the whole appeal of the flower is it’s size – 3mm – so a scale is necessary.
I have a larger version for sale .....

I never seem to tire of photographing these tiny blue flowers…a little native grass orchid, FNQ, Australia / Macro with Canon PowerShot A480 as is, from camera. 1:1 FEATURED in Flowers In Macro Group / My Bubblesite Gallery
Was pretty happy to find this species flowering at Mount Barker Western Australia. / Photographed in early October 2009.
A small group of Caladenia flava at Mount Barker Western Australia. / Early October 2009.
The name is probably a reference to the genus Phalaena, the name given by Carolus Linnaeus to a group of large moths; the flowers of some species supposedly resemble moths in flight. For this reason, the species are sometimes called Moth orchids.
