A specimen from my wife’s orchid house in Yungaburra, far north Queensland, Australia.
This orchid also grows in my garden.
She’s a hybrid orchid, and her name is Cymbidium Dolores Hoytex x Tom Thumb. It took me a while to really appreciate her but she has subtle charm. This image is part of my “Astonishing Orchids” calendar. Please visit my profile and take a look. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 105mm AF macro lens / Tripod
This orchid just makes me smile in the morning. It’s just a delight.
Another orchid – this one is called Cymbidium April showers Apricot nectar. / Rather gorgeous, I think. This image is part of my “Astonishing Orchids” calendar. Please visit my profile and take a look. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 105mm AF macro lens / tripod

So happy to see these in Belgrave South again… have been watching the spot and thought the owners had mown them! When I was photographing yesterday the owner walked over to have a chat and walked on several on his side of the fence! He thought the flowers looked pretty so hadn’t mowed them… he’s got no idea of what he has… and that is the only good stand of these on the whole SE side of Melbourne!!!! LOL, he promised to leave them for “about 4 weeks”.... arrrhhh!!! He has had a great little colony of Greenhoods by the look of it, they are finished now but there are heaps of “leaves” coming up all over his front nature strip… he says he doesn’t mow on the Courtney’s road side any more, the CFA use it as a “parking bay” during summer so there is hope for the ones there… / Not necessarily rare but very limited in this area Taken with my Lumix, as a farewell outing before being retired to my daughter… no more macro for it LOL

Another of my orchids.
A macro shot of my fathers white orchid.
Another shot of the same orchid
This is another of the Western Australia Orchids with an evocative name. You can easily see the Cossack leaping and doing the splits. I have to smile at the mental picture every time I look at this photo. I just love the joy that is expressed by this flower.
We will be building a new house next year and look what I found on the block!!! I believe it is a Slender Onion orchid (Microtis parviflora). I am a bit excited but a little scared too… where there’s one, there may be more?? Anyway, this one survived the slashing 3 weeks ago and I was happy to see it!! Not sure how it will go in the building scheme of things, it’s outside the building envelope and the sewer envelope but slap bang between the 2 so lots of work over the top… do I need to protect it… how do I protect it?
Leaves up to 45 cm long and 5 cm wide, horizontally arching flower spikes about 60 cm long . The flowers are greenish white or cream with petals and sepals up to 15 cm long, darker spotted at their base and on the short triangular labellum. They are very fragrant.
