THE SUBJECT: / Another springtime dawn breaks over this ancient land spreading its light and warmth and burning off the mist in the valleys just as it has done for untold millennia. THE LOCATION: / This landscape photograph was made from the lookout at the Mount Seaview turn-off along the Oxley Highway west of Long Flat, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING OF ‘Jasper’s Sunrise #1’: / Six of us from the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club, in two 4WD vehicles set out at 5am in time to greet this sunrise on our way on a day trip to The Cells State Conservation Area and the old gold mine there. / The ‘Jasper’ part of the title comes about due to the Jasper’s Village Resort sign I was standing under when I made the shot. / Canon EOS D60 & Canon 28-135 IR Lens: RAW, f/4.5 @ 1/750sec, 56mm, -1EV, ISO100, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. Due to the possible demise of my beloved Milady Fuji, (S9600), after being swamped by a wave while shooting surfers, a very good friend has kindly lent me one of his DSLRs and a very good walkabout lens. THE SUBJECT: / A tiny Aussie Litoria fallax (Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog), no more than 1” (2.5cm) long encounters yours truly on a Nature safari. THE LOCATION: / Photographed on the grounds of a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend’s property at Kundabung, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING OF ‘Uho! Pebbly Beach Forster, shot late in afternoon. I was out doing a portrait session on this beach and during shoot noted the green moss that has appeared on the rocks. So after the shoot made my way back onto the beach to grab some quick shots before heading home. HDR in Photomatix pro, vignetted and slight warming of colours. canon 1Dmk11, 15-30 lens – RAW
THE SUBJECT: / A tiny Diaea evanida (Flower Spider) sitting at the end of an Actinotus helianthus (Flannel Flower) petal in a last stand against a pesky photographer. THE LOCATION: / Photographed in the Grant’s Head Nature Reserve, Bonny Hills, NSW, Australia.. THE MAKING OF ‘Last Stand’: / With my beloved Milady Fuji, (the S9600), at the doctors I set out on a Nature safari with my old workhorse Mr Fuji, (S5500) on a glorious spring day. / I went straight to Grant’s Head, loaded myself up with tripods and headed down the rough gravel gully that acts as a track to where the Flannel Flowers grow. / They were in abundance again this year and so I went slowly from plant to plant on the hunt for spiders, bees, beetles etc until I found this li’l fella. / It was originally sitting more towards the centre of the flower but by the time I set everything up I was well and truly sprung and when I went to make the shot it walked to the end of the petal. / I thought it would disappear over the edge as they are want to do but my gutsy subject turned to face me – a last stand. / What I pleasantly discovered was that by applying the knowledge and experience I have gleaned in using the 9Mp S9600 to the 4Mp S5500 that has less bells and whistles was I could successfully squeeze images of even more quality from it than I had before. / Fuji S5500: RAW, f/3 @ 1/1000sec, ISO64, Auto focus, Tripod, Timer. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. THE SUBJECT: / The sole figure of a man strolling along the beach is made miniscule by the great forces of Nature around him. THE LOCATION: / This seascape was shot at Lake Cathie, NSW, Australia on cold, wet, stormy winter afternoon. THE MAKING OF ‘Alone’: / I was out cruising my favourite locales south of my home in Port Macquarie when I spotted this lone figure. / His small presence in such a vast scene impressed upon me the true insignificance of Man on this planet. / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/3.7 @ 1/1400sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3.
