Location : Sleepy Hollow > New York State > USA FEATURED in Nikon DSLR Users Group FEB 07 10 . Philipsburg Grist Mill is located in the village of Sleepy Hollow, New York, and dates from 1693 when Frederick Philipse of Yonkers was granted a charter along the Hudson River. / Historic mill is restored to its appearance in the late 17th/early 18th century. / Three hundred years ago, the mill at Philipsburg Manor was essential to the site’s trading and provisioning operations. Owned by a family of Dutch merchants and operated by as many as 23 enslaved Africans, Philipsburg Manor Upper Mills became the headquarters of a more than 52,000-acre estate and the center of a worldwide shipping enterprise. The Philipse family ground the grain grown by some 200 tenant farmer families. Much of the grain was traded in the West Indies for sugar and other staples that were in turn traded in England for manufactured goods. Today the mill is at the heart of Philipsburg’s educational programming. / . I think you can measure really close friends when you invite them around for dinner and then shortly before they arrive, announce that you’re just nipping out to the coast for a couple of hours because the sunset looks like it’s going to be spectacular !!! Needless to say, my wife was none too happy and made me pay for it with frosty glances for the rest of the evening…. / Photography for me is a very new hobby and I don’t think they quite appreciate the pleasure It gives me…. I think they would see it differently if I hadn’t have gone and had missed this wonder of nature..then they would have seen a different side to me !!! .. :0) One very positive comment did come from the evenings events and that was their love of Black and white photography which prompted me to convert a few images just to see how they would turn out and I must admit….I think I’ll be revisiting most of my favourite shots to see how they look with this treatment… ! Your opinion would be greatly received please :) Nikon D90 / Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm / Exp 2.5 sec / F/16 / ISO 100 Hitech 0.9 ND filter 3 stop & 0.9 ND Grad

It was yesterday on a cold and misty morning. Not the sort of weather when most people feel like going out for a lovely walk. And it was no good for cycling either as many of the forest paths still have icy patches here and there. But somehow or other I felt the pull of the fog and could not stay at home. Once again I was rewarded for my efforts, I find. I did not even have to go very far. On the grounds of the country-house Einde Gooi which is less than 3 miles away from our home, I found what I was looking for, lovely misty beech-tree lanes. Fortunately nobody had cut down the beech-trees here. Normally, however, the lower branches are cut away regularly in such lanes, to keep those clean high trunks which are so typical for these trees. But here two branches or rather twigs had escaped from that cut – perhaps they only started to grow after the last round, as they are comparatively small. The nice thing about them was that they had kept their leaves. And so they gave a extra beautiful colour element to the blue-greyish scene, a last memory of the splendour of autumn. Facing Saint Mark Basin, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first St George’s church dates back to the 8-9th century. In 982 the whole island was donated to a Benedictine monk, who founded the adjacent monastery. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610. The church, sometimes designated as a basilica, is a prime example of Palladio’s architectural style, and one of the finest churches he designed. The bell tower, first built in 1467, fell in 1774; the reconstruction was completed in 1791. The Benedictine monks still officiate in the church.
