HMS Gannet was a sloop of the Victorian Royal Navy, built on the River Medway at Sheerness in 1878 and designed to patrol the world’s oceans flying the British flag and protecting our interests and trade. Powered by both sail and steam, she has a hull constructed from stout teak planking on a strong iron frame and is historically highly significant, being listed as part of the United Kingdom’s core national collection of historic ships. HMS Gannet has recently undergone a £3m restoration and resides at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. / Acknowledgment to “The Historic Dockyard Chatham” website for the above information Shot taken with a Pentax Optio E-60 point and shoot camera

The rusted out remains of the battleship USS Utah sunk a few minutes after 8:0AM 7 December 1941. In researching this old ship i read that there are still an unknown number of sailors still aboard. A brief effort to salvage her was in vain and so she remains right where she was sunk at her berth on the north side of Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The following is from the USS Utah Memorial Web Site The Utah statistics were impressive for the “Dreadnought era”—21,825 tons that drew approximately 28 feet. Top speed was estimated at 20 knots. The crew consisted of 60 officers and 941 men. Fire power was measured by five gun turrets, armed with two 12-inch guns. Supplementing the main armament were 16, 5-inch, 51-caliber guns and two 21-inch submerged torpedo tubes. Armor 12 inches thick surrounded the vital areas of the vessel. /

When HMS Warrior 1860 made her triumphant return to Portsmouth in 1987, she was fully restored to her Victorian glory and changed the panorama of the City, sitting proudly in the Harbour. When she was originally built she was, quite simply, bigger, faster and more heavily armed than any other warship afloat. Warrior was the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship powered by steam as well as sail and constructed of wrought iron. She was the ultimate deterrent. She never once fired a shot in anger. Her strength was her ability to keep the peace. She represents Pax Britannica at its zenith. However within a decade she was obsolete, her technology surpassed. The only surviving member of Queen Victoria’s Black Battle Fleet, Warrior was used for 50 years as an oil jetty at Milford Haven before being restored to her former glory.
