I chose the Woodpecker for this challenge, because I see one everyday in my garden, although this particular species (Greater Spotted Woodpecker) is not endangered in the UK the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is on the Red Status list (RSPB), then I decided to have a look and see if there are any other species of Woodpecker that are endangered throughout the world and that opened up a can of worms.
The list I have, shows 21 Woodpeckers as endangered worldwide but this list doesn’t seem to be accurate as the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker isn’t listed. Anyway the woodpecker what is it? Well its a bird of course, of the order – Piciformes. Woodpeckers have very strong sculls to cushion the blows to the head when boring for insects or attracting a mate, they also have very long tongues which they use to feed on insects. The tongue is like a barb and can pierce its prey and is also covered in a sticky mucus which the insects will stick too.
Why are they endangered, well the main reason is the destruction of habitat, Woodpeckers need trees to survive and live in wooded areas.
So my fellow members lets see your images of Woodpeckers, any woodpeckers are allowed.
