Order - Diptera

This challenge closed almost 6 years ago.

The Challenge

Challenge number 12 in our Order challenges. As I mentioned in my last message to you, there is a new group on Redbubble just for Flies so lets have an Order challenge dedicated to them too. As you may or may not know these little creatures play and important role within the worlds biodiversity.

  • Diptera means ‘two winged’.
  • There are a few flies (parasitic) which are wingless instead they just have 2 tiny pins sticking out as a reminder.
  • Flies unlike other flying insects only have 2 wings.
  • They have compound eyes with over 4000 lenses, they can’t see very well but are fantastic at detecting movement.
  • Flies pollinate plants but they are also beneficial when it comes to recycling dead and decaying matter.
  • Flies or should I say maggots play a crucial role in forensic science.
  • Maggots have and still are used in medicine (bred in laboratories) they are used to eat away any dead, infected area within a wound.

So you see not only are they fantastic to photograph but they have a very important purpose in life one which we tend to over look, although I wouldn’t recommend sharing a sandwich with them, in the right place they are

Order – In scientific classification used in biology, the order (Latin: ordo) is a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms. Or in simple terms a name given to a group of animals, plants, fungi that are similar in some way, closely related, have something in common.
