ENDANGERED SPECIES - Wolf

This challenge closed about 6 years ago.

The Challenge

As I have seen so many pictures of this creature over the last few weeks and it being my favourite of all the animals we share this planet with I guess its time to give this persecuted creature the stage it deserves. I’m not going to narrow this down to subspecies as I think most are endangered.

Gray Wolf – The largest of the canines, the Gray Wolf has many names and with a population of 7000-9000 in Alaska and as little as 3500 in the lower states the Gray Wolf has been hit bad. There was an estimated 2 million of these wolves in 57 countries decades/centuries ago including Britain but due to the persecution of this creature over centuries and decades it is now thought that only 200,000 exist worldwide. We take there land and yet we expect them to walk away.

Red Wolf – This wolf was actually declared extinct in the wild in the 1980’s when the last known breeding pair was captured for a breeding programme, there are now an estimated 200 known to be living in North Carolina.

Maned Wolf – Endangered in the following countries, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay. Rather like a red fox with long legs this wolf has been hunted for sport and for the use of its body parts for medicinal purposes and with habitat loss also against it time will only tell.

Ethiopian Wolf – Only found in Ethiopia there are less than 200 left in the wild. The reasons are down to loss of habitat, distemper, rabies, due to close encounters with domestic dogs.
