The Majestic Theatre is one of the oldest continually operating country picture theatres in Australia. It is an icon of national cinema heritage and Far North Queensland settler history and architecture. In 1928, the township of Malanda thrived thanks to gold finds at nearby Boonjie. This, and the subsequent opening of the Gillies highway to the coast, prompted Patrick English, to take advantage of the tremendous potential promised by the latest sensation in public entertainment-the “Cinematographe”. Paddy was the son of dairy pioneer, farmer and entrepreneur James English, who built the Malanda Hotel, renowned today as the biggest all-timber building in the Southern Hemisphere. In December 1928 construction of the Tableland’s first and finest “moving picture Emporium”, the Majestic Theatre, was completed.
/ Every venue on our tour is different so every day we have the constant joy of sound checking. We use in ear monitors which means we all have our own mix instead of using big fold back speakers at the front of the stage which is a great idea in theory but usually takes a lot longer to get arranged! The size and type of venue effects the ear monitors and all of the lighting positions have to be re-arranged depending on space available. It’s a lot of work for the crew and quite tedious. I had lost the will to live by about 30 mins in felt that lying on the floor was a better option….turned out it was a nice angle to take a photograph from too! / Taken in Glenside, PA. USA.

The lovely Dan. Another hard working member of the team. Dan is in charge of the general running on the show. If there are any problems, he’s the man to see/ ask for help. His cans or headphones link up with lighting, sound and front of house and so is able to pass on messages that we can’t. He’s usually behind the scenes and i always think it’s a shame that he and the crew don’t get a nice bow like we do. / Again, he is up with the lark and works long hours. Another chap with a permanent smile who is a joy to be around and when you’re feeling down and a long way from home.. he’s good guy for hugging! ;) Cheers Dan..keep up the good work. / / Concorde, New Hampshire. We went to an open day at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool, Lancashire. It was packed out because there was also a craft fair on as well, so there wasnt much opportunity to take good pics. But I did manage to get a couple and here is one I liked. This theatre is reputed to be haunted so judge for yourself if the chap in the box is real or not.
