The Sidoarjo mud flow or Lapindo mud, is a mud volcano in the subdistrict of Porong, Sidoarjo in East Java, Indonesia that has been ongoing since May 2006 as an alleged result of poor drilling practice. As of October 30, 2008, the mud flow is still ongoing at a rate of 100,000 m3 per day. It is expected that the flow will continue for the next 30 years. As of November 2008, the Sidoarjo mud flow is contained by levees, but further breakouts are possible. This shot taken between the primary and secondary levees. Another of the beautiful features of Noosa Heads, is Weyba Creek and Lake Weyba. Just before the Noosa River exits to the Pacific Ocean, there is a offshoot called Weyba Creek. This feeds from Lake Weyba, nestled in the Noosa National Park area, Queensland, Australia. These river systems are all part of the Noosa Biosphere, and are home to many species of bird and animal life. Much of it, untouched by man, which is the way is should stay… Canon 50D, 16mm, 5:00pm. The clouds reflecting off of the swamp made for such a beautiful image, and in the calmness of the water something decided to jump, and make one ripple in the water. This tree has a bit of a story I suppose. Those living in the Brisbane area know it as “Garry’s” tree….just kidding. It is a fantastic subject both for Sunrises and Sunsets and even night shots. Go and get it…hehe
Taken in the Weeribben National Park in the Netherlands in November 2009. / I came across this tree that had fallen in the last couple of years while crawling through the wetland woods. It’s all covered in moss and new growth now so the cycle continues..

Taken in the Weeribben National Park in the Netherlands in November 2009. / This area is a preserved wetland with a whole host of wildlife. / I’m also trying to identify this one.. As far as I can tell it’s Common Aloina Moss, but I can’t be sure.. any moss experts out there can clear up the mystery??
Somewhere out there… there are some pretty dirty birds. I found this empty bird nest along a pathway while strolling in Ottawa’s west end on a November day. Cleary, the empty nest is not only mad up of swigs and dabs of mud but also blanketed with smoothly sculptured mud. How clever is that? Next step? Investigate what species builds such ingenious structure. Photo taken with a Canon EOS 20D, a 300mm f2.8 lens and a 1.4t.c.

Renowned as the Mango Capital of the world and stage set for Baz Luhrmann’s movie Australia...we chatted to many locals who shared colourful stories about their acting days as extra’s on that wonderful set. View from the lookout at the new Interpretive Centre and Cafe complex on Flagstaff Hill; looking south-west over the mangroves of Bowen on the Bowen River. The ocean foreshore is currently undergoing serious develpment with the expansion of the marina, creation of parks and beach pools and trendy boutiques and cafe’s… Bowen has come of age!

! Location: Taken early in the morning on one of the many marshes at FortWhyte Alive our Nature Center on the southwest edge of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I found these two oak leaves frozen in the ice, as the temperature dipped to -10c, the other night, so far we still have not had any snow....These leaves are surrounded by duck weed, by the way. Camera Details: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, 55mm Lens, Aperture exp 5.6, Shutter speed 1/60, ISO 200.
This group is intended for lovers of fine photography for the more ‘dirty’ aspects of our jobs. Going down to the mudflats to take photos.
The photos MUST be at any of the title suggestions – mangroves, marshes, and mudflats, but may include tidal zones or swamp areas.
They must contain a significant proportion of the area to demonstrate the vast beauty that surrounds.
They may picture animals of the area (preferably no close ups or macros).
At present art works are automatically accepted and challenges will occur as the group grows.
If we start finding various photos that don’t fit the theme they will be removed without warning.
Let’s get dirty!!!
Congratulations to reflector with this wonderful photo of the mangroves at the Kooragang Wetland Centre in Newcastle.
Please congratulate reflector on this winning photo for the first challenge in the Mangroves, Marshes and Mudflats group – WELL DONE!!!
