Book Signing & Art Show – Biloxi, Mississippi by Leon Walker
On November 12, 2009 I participated in a live radio interview on “The Morning Show” at WTNI Radio in Biloxi, Mississippi. I also did a book signing that evening, promoting my new book “Work Wonders”. The signing was held in conjunction with an International Art Extravaganza featuring the work of “Lamin Dibba” from The Gambia, West Africa. The event was held at Negotto’s Gallery in Biloxi. I signed alot of books and met a ton of really great people. The event was scheduled to last for two hours but it lasted nearly four! Genius At Work by Arla M. Ruggles
During his youth in the U.S. Air Force, my friend “Wild Bill” Taylor worked with the famous scientist, Werner Von Braun. In his eightieth year, Bill decided to proceed with development of a magnetic generator. Bill’s vision was of a world where energy would be virtually free to all. Imagine: no hunger, no poverty; no reason for war! Bill worked tirelessly on his machine until the day he died in December, 2005. By then, his hands were so palsied, he was not able to solder, so that became one of my jobs, as Bill’s “assistant”. This was one of the last photos taken of my dear, dear friend working on his marvelous machine. Turkish Wrestling by taiche
Courtesy Wikimedia Yağlı güreş (English pronunciation: /ˈjɑːlə ˈɡʊrɛʃ/, Turkish: [ˈjaːlɯ ˈɟyreʃ]) is the Turkish national sport. It is commonly known as oil wrestling (sometimes as grease wrestling) because the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil. It is related to Uzbek Kurash, Tuvan Khuresh and to Tatar Köräş. The wrestlers, known as pehlivan (from Persian پهلوان or pahlavan, meaning “hero” or “champion”) wear a type of hand-stitched lederhosen called kisbet (sometimes kispet), which were traditionally made of water buffalo hide, but now also of calfskin. Unlike Olympic wrestling, oil wrestling matches may be won by achieving an effective hold of the kisbet. Thus, the pehlivan aims to control his opponent by putting his arm through the latter’s kisbet. To win by this move is called paça kazık. Originally, matches had no set duration and could go on for one or two days, until one man was able to establish superiority, but in 1975 the duration was capped at 40 minutes for the baspehlivan and 30 minutes for the pehlivan category. If no winner is determined, another 15 minutes—10 minutes for the pehlivan category—of wrestling ensues, wherein scores are kept to determine the victor. The annual Kırkpınar tournament, held in Edirne in Turkish Thrace since 1362, is the oldest continuously running, sanctioned sporting competition in the world. In recent years this style of wrestling has also become popular in other countries, most notably the Netherlands and Japan. More about this sport at the bottom of the page …. The earliest depictions of wrestling are found in the Beni Hasan Temple in Egypt. The sport of oil wrestling dates back to 2650 BC in Egypt and Assyria. Turkish wrestlers had started covering themselves according to the Islamic law (between the navel and the knees) after the 10th century. When the ancient Turkish freestyle wrestling met the ancient Greco-Roman olympic oil wrestling, a new wrestling style was born: Traditional Turkish Oil Wrestling. Freestyle and the leather clothing came from traditional Turkish wrestling called “karakucak” (literally means black hug), olive oil came from the ancient olympic wrestling and most of the wrestling terms from Persian. In the Ottoman Empire, wrestlers learned the art in special schools called تکیه tekke, which were not merely athletic centres, but also spiritual centres, similar to those attended by the Japanese Sumo wrestlers, where it was taught that man is not just matter, but also spirit. These centers bear a striking resemblance to the Zurkhanes of Iran. This could explain the abundance of Persian terms in oil wrestling. Since competition without the harmony of matter and spirit would be detrimental to the development of good character, wrestlers oil one another prior to matches as a demonstration of balance and mutual respect. Equally, if a younger man should defeat an older man, he kisses the latter’s hand (A sign of respect for elders in Turkey, similar to a Japanese bow). Matches are held all over Turkey throughout the year, but in early summer the wrestlers gather in Kırkpınar for the annual three-day wrestling tournament to determine who will be the baspehlivan (chief hero) of Turkey. Every year, around 1000 wrestlers attend the tournament. Ottoman chroniclers and writers attest that the Kırkpınar Games have been held every year since 1362, making them the world’s oldest continually sanctioned sporting competition. Only about 70 times were the Games cancelled. The matches have been held there since 1924, where they were moved after the Balkan War. The original site had been some 35 kilometres distant. Kırkpınar, on the outskirts of Edirne (the second capital of the Ottoman Empire until the fall of Constantinople in 1453), was once the site of the summer hunting palace of the Ottoman Sultan. There are some organized competitions outside Turkey, prominent among which is the Royal Dutch Power Sport Federation (KNKF Koninklijke Nederlandse Krachtsport en Fitnessfederatie) in the Netherlands.

A Lunch Counter in Greensboro by Cora Wandel
In 1960 four black college freshmen walked into a Woolworth store in Greensboro, North Carolina and quietly sat down at the lunch counter. They were refused service because of the color of their skin, but they refused to leave and stayed until closing time. The next morning they came back with twenty-five more students. On the third day the sit-in consisted of sixty-three students, and they were still refused service. On the following day three white female students joined them, and by the fifth day Woolworth had more than three hundred demonstrators at the store. The next day the company said they were willing to negotiate, but only token changes were made which further infuriated the students and the sit-ins resumed. The city of Greensboro retaliated by adopting more stringent segregation policies and forty-five students participating in the sit-ins were arrested and charged with trespassing. By this time the black population was so enraged they launched a massive boycott of stores with segregated lunch counters and sales dropped by a third, forcing the store owners to relent. Six months from the very first sit-in, the four freshmen who started it all returned to the Woolworth’s lunch counter and were finally served. Writen in 1995, just after being locked up as an involuntary patient in the now closed Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital. Was released when I appealed. They now have changed my diagnosis from Paranoid Schizophrenia, to a brocken neck. / Made me think about the power of the system to take away the freedom they claim is all our right. / Now it makes me think about war and those that have anothers’ view of freedom and democracy thrust on them.

I recently joined my local shop for a spot of hands on volunteering… / I for one am deeply grateful for both my sight and hearing, it was the least I could do… / As an Artist that utilises both visuals and sounds in my work as well as someone who loves and appreciates the beauty of visual and aural delights, I decided this was a very good idea. A rural family tradition - Whenever a new baby comes to visit my grandparents’ old homeplace for the first time, they’re apt to get a turn in the same old #5 galvanized washtub we all bathed in fifty years ago—before the old house got indoor plumbing. Nowadays, its a lot easier; the warm water comes from a waterheater, instead of kettles on Grandma’s wood-burning kitchen stove. If you live on a Disability Support Pension in Australia, The Government and Social commentators freely admit you are living in POVERTY !! I have been on a DSP for 14 years… Paid off one off my credit cards last week, after they agreed to a hardship arrangement which stopped interest and fees. The next day they send me a new card…. So what did I do today ?? Purchased myself a New Pentax K-x 12.5 megapixel SLA digital camera… I think either the Australian government has no Idea what real POVERTY is, or I must be doing something out off the ordinary with my finances… Maybe 10 years in the largest Government owned bank made me a better money amnager than most… If a finance organoisation is silly enough to lend you money it is their dudy of care. If you are having trouble.. talk to them, they may waive fees and interest just to get their principle back… A bank or finance company will show you as much interset as they think they can get out of you. If you can then show them their is no interest from you, they will try to keep you as a customer…
