Featured in Ladybugs May 23, 2009 and in Urban Wildlife July 11, 2009 Featured on RB’s Homepage August 15, 2009 / All summer I searched for ladybugs in our gardens. I did find a few but not near AS MANY as in my own home over the winter months. I lost count of how many I gathered up from nooks and crannies and placed in a little aquarium in one contained apartment. I do NOT like to kill bugs and putting them outside in the snow was not an option. My next dilemma…what to feed them? Apparently they like Cheerios! For those just itching to know, they also like raisins and sliced green grapes :) Little droplets of water each day and they made out just fine. Now that Spring has arrived the surviving ladies have all been put back outside :) Canon Rebel EOS XTi with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Manual Mode, SS 1/80, f/5.6, ISO 200. Photo taken in my home, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. / / Beautiful Bugs / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
A swarm of ladybugs (or lady bird beetles) is a sight that can awe you. This location, of a small creek feeding a river, was well over 30 feet in length and over 7 feet tall, in rocks, trees, lichen, moss – literally anything, including the creek where the unlucky ones fell. I put my hand into the swarm in numerous places to see what it felt like and how deep some of the crevices were. Had I been brave enough, I probably could have buried my entire arm in this crevice and joined them. LOL! I got no bites other than the one that fell on my neck and got between the camera strap and my flesh. I forgive that one since none of his buddies minded my picking them up and slipping thru their masses. This images was graciously featured in Ladybugs group.

Ladybug on a flower petal
macro shot of ladybird taken using Canon Digital IXUS 85is, iso auto, vivid colour, superfine centre weighted average zoom.
Taken in my backyard (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) the second weekend of November. It’s unusual, because the yard would ordinarily be covered with snow at this time of year. It’s strange to still be seeing ladybugs and flowers in bloom. I’m not sure how well it comes through in the photo, but this ladybug was wearing autumn colours… She was more of a rust colour than the usual bright red, and blended in nicely with the woodchips. Nikon D700 / 105mm macro / f16 / 1/100 second exposure / ISO 560

Cleaning up some older folders from previous ladybird shoots at Mount Burr South Australia. These ladybirds mass in their thousands here at certain times of the year. Taking flowers out to them results in them climbing up and down petals and leaves in hunt for food. Canon 400D – Sigma 70 -300 macro.
