Comic Book Art Thread - Iron Man (join in the fun!)

matthewdunnart matthewdunnart 757 posts

I’ve been doing a daily journal where I post up various artists interpretations of classic comic book characters, and here’s your chance to join in the fun. Once a month a new thread will kick off featuring a few examples of a specific comic book character. We then want you to do your own version and post it up for all to see. It can be a quick 5 minute sketch, or a fully rendered piece, whatever you feel like bringing to the party.

Please remember that, as these are all characters owned by other people, you can’t sell the art that you make for this thread. But don’t let that stop you from joining in the fun.

First cab off the rank is IRON MAN. On the surface you might think “How diverse can the artistic approach to a man wrapped in a tin can get?”. Well, as these following pieces will show you, there are many different approaches you can take.

MIKE MIGNOLA

TIM SALE

ARTHUR ADAMS

ADI GRANOV

FRED HEMBECK

ERIC CANETE

Now show us what you’ve got!!!!

That looks great Rusty! Good to see people are looking at getting in on the action.

Sorry Rusty – forget to comment – looks awesome man, got an old school feel to it.

Agreed; nice job Rusty.

Ok at work and have managed to sneak an hours drawing in – my directors away and I just couldn’t resist – hehehe. I’ll scan and post my biro Iron Man when I get home. ;)

I could recognize that this is your Iron Man from a mile away Rusty. Way cool man!

Adi Granov is my hero! Before Iron Man Extremis I couldn’t care less about Iron Man. Great story, great villain and gob smacking art!

matthewdunnart matthewdunnart 757 posts

I was the same Michael. I didn’t mind Iron Man as a character within a larger story featuring other characters, but never really got into his solo adventures. Extremis was fantastic, and Matt Fraction’s writing on the current Invincible Iron Man series has also been outstanding.

Here’s my slightly over worked ballpoint doodle of Iron Man. If my directors reading this – I drew it in lunch break – Cough cough.

That’s fantastic ausven! Really like the techniques you’ve used to give off the reflective tone of the suit.

Thanks mate!! This is a great idea of yours – can’t wait for next month!! Might have to do another Iron Man just to pass the time. :)

Michael Lee Michael Lee 461 posts

That is really cool, ausven! Not a stroke out of place! Dammit, I’ll have to try something quick as well…

Matt: I’ve just purchased three TPBs of Fraction’s run but haven’t gotten around to reading it all yet. I found the premise to be rather illogical but I’ve been assured it cleans up later in the story arc.

Part of why I never got into the character before was because I didn’t buy the suit. All that skin tight malleable steel didn’t go a long way in my book. Until Granov brought the suit into the realm of plausibility with those solid, armour plates I couldn’t get over the incredulity.

Wow, Ausven and Rusty you guys are awesome! Totally kickarse

Slick stuff, Ausven. Love that sheen on his helmet.

Here’s my effort. Totally digital. Thought I’d take the Kirby approach.

Thanks everyone for the compliments, and Ausven that really is great, reminds me I should brush up on my anatomy, I keep telling myself I need to take a rest with the digital and get back to drawing on paper, I’m far better with an actual pen in my hand.
Ausven I love the head, it’s got a sort of anime look, not sure why that is but I like it!

Rustyoldtown Rustyoldtown 238 posts

Awesome Sturstein, love the clenched fist, very heroic looking!

Hey, my Iron Man just got a RB feature! :D
How do ya like that? I spend days working on pieces that get no attention, then I throw this together in under an hour and BAM!! One day I will finally learn that I shouldn’t put any real effort into my work.

Thanks Rusty. I agree that digital is fun, but it’s just not the same as scribbling with a real pencil and slinging real ink ;)

Michael Lee Michael Lee 461 posts

WOW!! An RB feature! It doesn’t get more exciting than that. In regards to effort to success ratio that’s always the way it goes. After I’ve finished inking my Vader drawing I’ll have to scribble an Iron Man!

That’s fantastic Sturstein, well deserved buddy :-)

Nick Ford Nick Ford 358 posts

I find that’s the way it works for me too Sturstein! Crazy eh!?

Great piece btw! Got an old school vibe about with the halftones n all.
