Comic Art Thread #3 - Batwoman
A fairly new addition to the Batman universe in her current form. A former member of the military who left the service after revealing she was gay, and then started fighting crime with the direct assistance of her military father (and indirect assistance of the dark knight himself). If you want a fantastic read with truly stunning artwork then you can’t go past the recent Batwoman – Elegy collection (by Greg Rucka and J H Williams III). J H WILLIAMS III PHILLIP TAN SHELTON BRYANT MARCUS TO VALENTINE DELANDRO ALEX MALEEV RAMON PEREZ DARWYN COOKE |
Interesting choice Matt – I haven’t read any of the Batwoman stories but am intrigued. The JH Williams sample you’ve provided looks awesome – i’m gonna head down to Forbidden Planet tomorrow. |
You won’t regret it man, the way he approaches his art to suit the settings/themes/timelines within the story is really something to behold. And he’s co-writing and illustrating a whole new Batwoman series due to start soon, should be a treat. |

Well done Joozu – excellent start mate, great fluid style and love the lighting effects on her suit. I’m struggling to get anything together myself – up to my eyeballs in work at the mo. |
That looks great Joozu, really striking. Yeah, I think all the threads have hit a bit of a quiet patch at the moment due to everyone being flat out with other things. I’m hoping to get a couple of pieces done next week to post up. |
Great stuff, Joozu! I’m keen to get in on this as soon as I can. Doesn’t Phillip Tan’s stuff look amazing? Not what I expected of Batwoman at all. Very strong and non-sexual, in a good way. |
all beautiful examples as usual Matt…I love the Shelton Bryant and the Alex Maleev but they are all good. |
nice work Joozu. Love the style. And I like that you went for the dark, strong .. and ultimately very plausible female super hero .. instead of the busty hussy that I would have drawn :) Well done. |
It is really cool Joozu, dripping in originality. I wouldn’t expect less of course. |
I’m playing catch-up on these challenges at the moment..
Lily – That is killer. Love it! All marker? I’m trying to find time to play catchup too, but so far I’m failing miserably :( |
That is amazing Lily. Fantastic pose, and I love how you’ve captured the reflection of the light against her suit with your approach, that’s pure skill. I’m in the same boat as Sturstein, failing miserably to catch up with the threads of late. I think I’ll spend the first few days of August getting a pile of pieces together to bombard the threads with. I’m a bit too focused on my exhibition at the moment, so any characters I draw will most likely end up with a tentacle coming out of their mouth :-)~ |
Love it Lily! Nice pose and curves ……… oh the curves! |
Thank you Sturstein! :) I worked out that the only way I could keep the promise I made to myself to do these each week is to let go of perfection and be happy with something alittle rough. Now I just have to find a few minutes to do something rough! |
Thanks Mat! :) Thanks Nick! :) Matt – I’m sure whatever you come up with – tentacles and all- will be well worth the wait! Nick – hehe Curves are my favourite thing to draw :) |
beautiful Lily! great pose…treat yourself to a new black marker! |
Lily – I feel exactly the same way! Just gotta draw the damn thing without thinking about it. The stupid thing is that when we do manage it, we usually end up with great results! So why the hell do we find it so hard? |
That’s great Lily! Very intense and excellent feel of motion. |
Great one Lily! The dying marker worked pretty well on this and did the trick >:) |
Fanatastic LilyM! The pose and perspective are very striking and appealing. The kind of perspective that a goon may “enjoy” if Batwoman dropped into a circle of goons and she work her way around to pummelling him soon as she spots him huddled in the corner. The dying marker was put to good use on her thigh there to illustrate that nice gradient. Well done. |
Lily, really great dynamic work!! Great marker work too – Looking forward to Lobo man. |
Thanks everyone! I will be treating myself to a new black marker :) I might get out my ink and brushes to experiment more Sturstein – Tell me about it! Thinking too much and putting too high an expectation on myself screws me up before I even start. I find being really tired helps with the not thinking too much…but I wouldn’t recommend it. Lobo soon – I promise :) |
Lily – Yeah, I produce some of my best work at 2am when I’m half asleep ;) |

Here’s three sketches I rubbed together to make this super simple gif animation. I still plan to make it into a still picture with the two preceding images ghosted. |
