Cartoon Art Thread #3 - AEON FLUX
Aeon Flux started life as a series of short animation pieces on MTV’s “Liquid Television” in the early 90’s, and eventually went on to get her own animated series. 10 years after that the live action film hit the screens (to very mixed reactions from fans….and her creator Peter Chung, who was quoted as saying “seeing it made me feel helpless, humiliated and sad”).

oh dear, the ultimate challenge of form and musculature. There’s no flesh to hide errors under in this one !! |
The million dollar question is, do we try to capture that stylised, elongated form, or just fall back on our own individual styles? I’ve tried her a few times before, and drawing those proportions is not easy. |
It’ll be interesting to see how people approach Ms Flux. She’s got a very masculine feel to her, while at the same time retaining a very elegant and feminine look. |

that’s ok Dwarf-Man , as long as you post a new one as well. :) |
Really nice work on that one Sturstein. |
Thanks guys. And yes Octo, I suppose I can draw a new one. I’ll add her to my list of jam characters I’m behind on ;) |
I first saw Aeon Flux on Liquid TV when it was on SBS in the mid 90’s. I used to tape all the late night SBS cartoons. I had episodes of The Maxx, Liquid TV, Aeon Flux, The Head… not to mention all those Manga cartoons. Man, SBS used to be awesome. I miss Des Mangan. |
Paul – I second that! Des showed us the coolest stuff. |

Mike ! that is groin-tastic ! I’ve been seeing a little bit of Aeon Flux in your style for a while, so I knew you’d nail this. And you did. |

here’s mine….

Octochimp: Yeah, I like the ladies ripped up but not emaciated like Aeon Flux. I couldn’t help add a little more muscle on her. Less catwalk model and more figure competitor. |
Hey, vampvamp! You can’t slide that one by me! I used that screen shot as a colour reference. ;P Nice shading and framing, none the less. |
thanks mike |

Don’t get me wrong – I copied my favourite artists’ work for about a decade before I even started to get good. It’s a great way to learn. |

the line work and shading looks great Vamp. :) |

nice background. :) “Don’t get me wrong – I copied my favourite artists’ work for about a decade before I even started to get good. It’s a great way to learn.” regardless of this….i don’t yet have the confidence to create something out of my brain based on unfamiliar characters nor the skills as yet. whatever you do with fan based art or known characters there will always be an element of copying. this was a freehand sketch of another piece of art but it’s mine version as it’s not perfect. i am impressed with this version, more so the plain sketch. i still have a long way to go & it is only because of these threads/challenges, that i am pushing myself & motivated to be involved, to learn, to grow…. |

well it’s really no different to having someone pose for you while drawing them. It’s still really difficult. Good job V. :) |
