1. Your icon should be an image created by you; no photography; manipulated “stock images” will not be accepted; most pop celebrities are not acceptable.
2. Nudity only if appropriate to the image (some classic icons don’t always cover up!);
3. No more than two submissions per day, please;
4. Prose or poetry about icons in general need not have an image included, but collaboration is fun and fine;
5. If you are unsure if your image is an “icon,” ask yourself if it fits the context of the categories listed below or contact a host for clarification: all pretty faces do not an icon make.
Some ideas about what makes an image an icon: see images here.
> The theme is iconic: it is a representation of a sacred personage, either in a traditional or in a modern way;
> It looks like an icon: for example , the choice of the colours gives a gold-byzantine-like feeling, or a golden/silver/transcendal background, or a halo;
> It contains symbols of traditional religious art iconography, either in a traditional or in a modern context (eg. Mary’s lilly, a crucified position, Eve and the apple…);
> The subject of the image is sacralized: it contains personal symbols that are sacralized through the way that they are painted;
> The use of the image is spiritual: the image physically fulfills a spiritual role, which you explain in your description or it looks like an object of prayer;
> It raises discussion about the meaning of an icon.
6. If your image is not iconic in an obvious way, please include a writing about why you consider a submission ikonic. This would not only help the group hosts in their decision making, but it would also help your viewers understand your image and / or discover new aspects in it.
7. Honour RedBubble guidelines for groups;
8. Treat fellow artists with the same respect and care you would want for yourself;
9. Follow the guidelines of the group (it helps).
If you are not having it yet, consider having serious fun!
Hosts shall retain the right to subjectively reject any image or writing which, in their opinion, does not meet the guidelines. If you wish to include a writing about why you consider a submission ikonic, please do so.
