Baby owls will evade their predators in many ways, and the most inventive is by making themselves look HUGE, all the while clacking their beaks threateningly! The mule deer congregate in our area for the rut as we are on a sparsely populated butte. The afternoon light provides a rich frame to set off their stunning strength and beauty, and the fading fall colors provide a soft counterpoint. Castle Geyser, Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, USA. A thoroughly unpredictable geyser, Castle Geyser nevertheless often offers spectacular eruptive events that can last for an hour or more. First super-heated water shoots into the air soon to be followed by a steam event that, at least in this case, encompassed the better part of an hour. During late Spring and the summer months when the sun is shining, when Castle Geyser erupts between 6 and 8 pm, a curvaceous rainbow will appear in the mist falling from the steam cloud. Canon 50D, Tamron 28-75mm lens, shutter 1/60, f/18.0, focal length 28m, ISO 100, Manfrotto tripod, Wimberley II head. May 26, 2009

Even while taking a short break from stalking breakfast, he’s always alert. Something caught his attention and he’s focused intently on it. Even though I was looking in the same direction to see what it was (they’re always on the look out for coyotes), I couldn’t find anything worth holding his attention. It apparently was too interesting for him either – after a few seconds he slowly stalked off in the opposite direction. These fellow travelers seem to have voted and come to a consensus that they had better head south to beat the storm though evening was upon them. Perhaps they were worried about flight delays and possible groundings coming down from the FAA due to the coming winter storm.
