HDiR the marriage of INFRARED and HDR

If you know how to take an infrared photo and do HDR processing you’re already there!! Just put the 2 together !!
But like all good marriages, they need some effort and don’t always work!

You can do the real thing, with a range of different exposures or just fake it with one pic and get some great effects.

But first off you need your infrared images! There are 2 ways to get them. First and cheapest is the IR filter. I’m not a fan of filters, I just couldn’t get the hang of it. But for some AWESOME examples of just what can be achieved with them see Naomi Frost’s work. Second there is the converted camera. This is much more expensive but so much easier!! Lightsmith has written about that here

After you’ve got your photos, you need to process them. I use Photoshop cs3 with a plug-in called ReDynaMix most of the time, but I also have Photomatix.
First off I usually just do levels and maybe channel swap (even with the true HDR 3 exposure shots). After saving the files, I do the HDR merge and then use ReDynaMix until I get something I like. If it’s a single shot “fake HDR”, I just play around with it in ReDynaMix. Sometimes I’ll tweak the levels or channels again to see if I get a better effect. And that’s about it. Fairly simple really.

For something a little different, you can process a single photo 3 (or more) times in different ways (ie: just levels, levels and channels, make 1 b&w, etc) and then merge them with your chosen HDR program.

Experimentation is the key!!

You can get ReDynaMix for Photoshop here

There’s more about post-processing here and here and some stuff about HDR here (many thanks to the people who have taken the time to write these articles)

Hopefully this all makes sense!! LOL I’m not much of a writer. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!! :)

I sent in an HDR yesterday it was rejected based on the groups rules. Is your group strictly HDiR or do you also take straight HDR?
If so I will have to get a camera converted, or get some IR filters and give it a try. I like the combination of the two very much. I don’t have a camera I can convert at the moment.
