This photograph of a detail of the new white chapel on the hill was taken at the St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery in Florence, Arizona. This monastery was started in 1996 and now contains six chapels as well as orchards and gardens. There are 45 monks who live here. This is a must-see if you’re ever in the area. The workmanship is second to none. The carvings are all created in Greece and shipped to the monastery to be used in the chapels. This is the Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico showing the famous staircase. In 1853 a school for women was established in Santa Fe by the Sisters of Loretto. The chapel was constructed in 1873. An unknown carpenter answered prayers by the sisters for a staircase to the choir loft. The original architect had left and after construction of the chapel, no room was available for a conventional staircase. The chapel is now privately owned by the adjacent hotel. / FEATURED IN NEW MEXICO LAND OF ENCHANTMENT – 12/01/09 / FEATURED IN VISUAL ARTISTS OF GREEN VALLEY – 12/03/09

Given the price of pomegranites, this is one heck of a decorative piece. It was a big wreath, but I thought a close up of the poms was more effective than the whole thing. A ramble through the experimental gardens at Colorado State University in Fort Collins yielded a wealth of gorgeous iris. This one sent my mind into a fantasy world of fire breathing dragons. I did my best to capture the effect, then went all out with the “Cheap shot” effect. using a number of filters. Added 5 June, 09 Featured in Visual Artists of Green Valley

In most of the northern hemisphere, it’s late for plants to be sending up buds, but here in Arizona aloe are undeterred. This one had such a graceful curve, I couldn’t resist. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

I have photographed the Tucson doors and windows for the past three years or so and was hoping to photograph these icons of the city decked out for the Christmas season. Big disappointment. Very few of the homes were decorated, but this home-one of the most photographed-had little Santa hats on the columnar cactus. Since we rarely get snow in southern Arizona, hats on cacti us sometime all we get for decorations. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 with a couple of PS Elements artistic filters thrown in.

This building stands at Granada and Almeida in downtown Tucson. Unforntunately, I didn’t think to learn the name or occupants of the building after waiting nearly a month to photograph it. The focus of the moment was taking the pictures, not getting the name. Ah well, another trip. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18
