Graphic Scratch

Trash or Treasure?

Holly Ringland Holly Ringland 145 posts

Hello delectable Scratchers…

To inspire all those pens and quills to get scratching, it’s time for our next group writing challenge.

500 words or less.

The prompt is… recycled… secondhand… pre-loved… to make new again.

Works must revolve around the central theme of recycling… and don’t forget the Graphic Scratch guidelines… THREE (3) senses including ESP and use of adjectives… we want to taste, feel, live and see the world through your words.

Delightful news is the lovely folk at the top of the Red Bubble tree have showered us with prizes for this competition, so apart from gloating rights and walking around feeling very chuffed with yourself, there are two prizes up for grabs for first and second place:

1 x US$20 Red Bubble Voucher

1 x copy of In The Moment

Top writing pieces will also be featured works and featured members (further gloating rights and reasons to be tickled-pink) .

Please tag your piece with RECYCLED and post a link to it below here in this forum post.

Entries close August 16th 2008 midnight.

Make sure you bmail us if you have any questions…

Now dear hearts, go forth and scratch your graphic ink to share with us :)

Good luck !!

Holly.

I hope this is okay. I recycled a previous piece I had written, which is about, uh…yeah, recycling. In a way at least, as it was inspired by Habitat for Humanity.

Thanks JC, Miri and Jing for your submissions… well done!

Under a week to go now – come on lovely luscious descriptive word weavers… open up those imaginations around the concept of recycled… to use again… to make new of old… secondhand… pre-loved… used before but used now as though never touched…

Daric was a shy eighteen year old boy that had a hard time in school. One day a group of boys played a trick on him. While in the cafeteria he got up from the table to get a slice of bread and the mean group of boys pounced on the opportunity. They switched his carton of milk with that of a beautiful girl that he secretly admired.
Every student in the lunchroom watched Daric sip on the straw laced with cherry lipstick from the girl he hoped to make his girlfriend someday. As he tasted his drink his lips squeezed the straw as the students laughed at his gestures.
The quiet girl was sitting across from him as he decided to approach and apologize. She stood as he noticed the sweet smelling perfume on her. Daric tried to run out of the cafeteria because he was allergic to that aroma that would make him faint. However, it was too late and he fainted. Elizabeth came to his aide and as she raised his head planned a lasting kiss.
Daric walked home pondering his next move because he knew he had fallen in love with her. He wrote her some love letters that night willing to talk to her for the first time despite the embarrassing incident in school.
Elizabeth didn’t show up in school and Daric pushed the letters in her locker through the air vents. The letters continued for a week until he noticed a janitor unlocking and cleaning her cubbyhole. He asked, “Where is the person who uses this locker? “
“She moved, I guess!” finished off the cleaning lady.”
“May I have those letters that I placed in there?” She handed the lad all twenty love letters as he thought about mailing them, but didn’t know where to.
Daric threw the letters in a metal crate and into the ocean nearby.
Twenty years later while watching the waves at the beach and reminiscing about his crush on that girl he envisioned Elizabeth. Daric was a bachelor and his traveling days as a highly paid business executive had not lend itself time to search for another girl to fill his void heart.
As Daric gazed at the waves he observed a metal box drifting above the crest of the waves. He stood at the edge of the water to try and retrieve what was floating. However; a beautiful woman that was nearby also saw the metal box and she swam towards it.
When she returned Daric approached her and said, “Lady, may I view the contents of that box, it looks like something from my past.” She agreed to let him open the rustic box that drew tears from his eyes. The woman helped him remove the letters inside and noticed that they were addressed to Elizabeth. She sighed and said, “Wow, what a coincidence, my name is Elizabeth too. May I read one of those?”

Hope this fits the topic and that it is okay to submit a second entry:

November vegetation
in myriad shades of brown
withers dry.

Death rattles
tatter
across papery fields
of
corn.

Milo,
old and rusted
hunches troll-like
abandoned near
Beal Slough.

Tendriled arms
clutch
and plead,

“If you cannot save us,
give our children life.”

And a dozen prickly seeds
invade my socks.

Hello lovelies,

Pardon my lateness in getting this bmail out to you, I’ve been without internet at home for a week and a half and have tonight come home to discover, joy of joys, Telstra has looked favourably on me today and reconnected our service.

So… without further babble, this little letter is to thank the participants in our group challenge wholeheartedly for their entries.

Prior to launching our voting period I’d just like to ask every one to ensure that their entries are posted in our group challenge forum so that they are easily found by voters.

Don’t forget, there’s goodies up for grabs – a RB voucher so you can make your walls pretty with some fandangle art and a copy of In The Moment. Voting will commence on Wednesday 20th August and finish on the following Wednesday 27th. Good luck everyone!

I hope wherever you are today, and however you’ve spent your day, life has been kind to you.

Holly.

Graphic Scratch ‘Recycled’ Challenge

Voting Closes TOMORROW!

Hola enchanted scribblers,

Voting for our current challenge ends tomorrow, and so far I only have enough votes to count on one hand. Since the Red Bubble fairies have been so kind to shower us with prizes for this comp, and I have to go back and report how many entries we received and how many votes we received to decide the winners, it would be so grand if I had a substantial number to dazzle them with.

So if you find yourself with a little time and not a clue what to do with yourself, make yourself a cuppa, a cocktail, a something delish and check out the work of our members here then bmail me with the title of the piece that gave your mind fruit tingles.

I’m so proud to be involved in this collective group of such talented writers and would like to do whatever I can as co-host to keep the prizes a-coming for our future challenges.

Holly.

‘RECYCLED’ challenge votes are in!

To you who entered work and voted for the work in this challenge, from the bottom of our Graphic Scratch ink pot, we hosts say thanks :)

So… ahem…

Here’s a refresher on the writing challenge:

The prompt is… recycled… secondhand… pre-loved… to make new again. Works must revolve around the central theme of recycling… and don’t forget the Graphic Scratch guidelines… THREE (3) senses including ESP and use of adjectives… we want to taste, feel, live and see the world through your words.

The piece of work that received the most votes was All Summer Long by Jing3011

Next in line was a tie between Lost and Found by Miri and Soapstone Heart by Holly Ringland – but since I am a host, I happily step aside (the things we do) for Miri to claim her well-deserved prize.

Congratulations wonderful wordsmiths – choice of prize is up to the winner, with alternate prize going to second place.

Thank you to all who participated in this challenge… the interpretations of ‘recycled’ were wonderful and varied.

Somewhere today, I hope you all find yourselves in the writing ‘zone’ :)

Holly.
