This is a fossilised fern specimen, my last shot of fossils from the Australian Museum, Sydney (for now). I did a bit of post processing with this one as the original lighting isn’t much for photography. So had to adjust the Tone Curve, Saturation and Gamma to add some drama and interest to the shot; what I saw in my mind as I was photographing it. / Best viewd larger…really Ferns / Ferns first appear in the fossil record in the early-Carboniferous period. By the Triassic, the first evidence of ferns related to several modern families appeared. The “great fern radiation” occurred in the late-Cretaceous, when many modern families of ferns first appeared. / One problem with fern classification is the problem of cryptic species. Cryptic species are those which are morphologically similar to another species, but which differ genetically in ways that prevent fertile interbreeding. A good example of this can be seen in the currently-designated species Asplenium trichomanes, the maidenhair spleenwort. This is actually a species complex which includes distinct diploid and tetraploid races. There are minor but unclear morphological differences between the two groups, which prefer distinctly differing habitats. In many cases such as this, the species complexes have been separated into separate species, thus raising the number of overall fern species. Possibly many more cryptic species are yet to be discovered and designated. / Ferns have traditionally been grouped in the Class Filices, but modern classifications assign them their own division in the plant kingdom, called Pteridophyta. from: Wikipedia

I’m back to uploading more of my The Hidden Land collection. / These were also taken from the Australian Museum’s collection of rocks and minerals; the handicaps and limitations of the shots are the same – behind glass cases and limited lighting. As before, this collection features rocks and minerals highlighting their unique properties and formations. I always try to take as macro a shot as I can without loosing too much information about my subjects. Some post work was needed to bring out the textures and balance the lighting – Tone Curve, Saturation and Gamma. Best viewed larger…really Corundum/Rudy or Saphire / Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with traces of iron, titanium and chromium. It is a rock-forming mineral. It is one of the naturally clear transparent materials, but can have different colors when impurities are present. Transparent specimens are used as gems, called ruby if red, while all other colors are called sapphire. The name corundum probably derived from the Sanskrit “kuruvinda” meaning “ruby”. / Due to corundum’s hardness (pure corundum is defined to have 9.0 Mohs), it can scratch almost every other mineral. It is commonly used as an abrasive, on everything from sandpaper to large machines used in machining metals, plastics and wood. Some emery is a mix of corundum and other substances, and the mix is less abrasive, with a lower average hardness near 8.0. / In addition to its hardness, corundum is unusual for its high density of 4.02 g/cm³, which is very high for a transparent mineral composed of the low atomic mass elements aluminium and oxygen. / Corundum for abrasives is mined in Zimbabwe, Russia, and India. Historically it was mined from deposits associated with dunites in North Carolina and from a nepheline syenite in Craigmont, Ontario.Emery grade corundum is found on the Greek island of Naxos and near Peekskill, New York. Abrasive corundum is synthetically manufactured from bauxite. In 1837 Gaudin made the first synthetic rubies by fusing alumina at a high temperature with a small amount of chromium as a pigment. In 1847 Ebelmen made white sapphire by fusing alumina in boric acid. In 1877 Frenic and Freil made crystal corundum from which small stones could be cut. Frimy and Auguste Verneuil manufactured artificial ruby by fusing BaF2 and Al2O3 with a little chromium at temperatures above 2000°C. In 1903 Verneuil announced he could produce synthetic rubies on a commercial scale using this flame fusion process. The Verneuil process allows the production of flawless single-crystal sapphires, rubies and other corundum gems of much larger size than normally found in nature. It is also possible to grow gem-quality synthetic corundum by flux-growth and hydrothermal synthesis. Because of the simplicity of the methods involved in corundum synthesis, large quantities of these crystals have become available on the market causing a significant reduction of price in recent years. Apart from ornamental uses, synthetic corundum is also used to produce mechanical parts (tubes, rods, bearings, and other machined parts), scratch-resistant optics, scratch-resistant watch crystals, instrument windows for satellites and spacecraft (because of its transparency from the UV to IR), and laser components. from: Wikipedia Info for the group Contrasting Perceptions / lush and barren, light and shadow, sheer cliffs and gentle hill

Its chemical formula is Mg(UO2)2(PO4)2·10(H2O). It was discovered in 1932 at Shinkolobwe, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is named for Belgian mineralogist, Achille Salée (1883-1932), Professor at Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium. from: Wikipedia

It is a black, amorphous appearing mineral, often with a granular, fibrous or columnar structure, sometimes forming reniform crusts. It has a metallic luster, a black or bluish-black streak, and readily soils the fingers. The specific gravity is about 4.8. Its name is from the Greek for fire and to wash, in reference to its used to remove tints from glass.Pyrolusite and rhodochrosite are among the most common manganese minerals. Pyrolusite occurs associated with manganite, hollandite, hausmannite, braunite, chalcophanite, goethite and hematite under oxidizing conditions in hydrothermal deposits. It also occurs in bogs and often results from alteration of manganite. The metal is obtained by reduction of the oxide with sodium, magnesium, aluminium, or by electrolysis. Pyrolusite is extensively used for the manufacture of spiegeleisen and ferromanganese and of various alloys such as manganese-bronze. As an oxidizing agent it is used in the preparation of chlorine and disinfectants (permanganates) and for decolorizing glass. When mixed with molten glass it oxidizes the ferrous iron to ferric iron, and so discharges the green and brown tints. As a coloring material, it is used in calico printing and dyeing; for imparting violet, amber, and black colors to glass, pottery, and bricks; and in the manufacture of green and violet paints. from: Wikipedia
The surf is so high here at Caspersen Beach, Venice, Florida that the stairs lead directly into the rocks and surf.
The surf was really kicking up at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island , Florida. I love all the shells that wash up near the rocks.
Papua Shell, Austrian Mounatin Rock Crystals, pearls, Green Onxy, Garnet, Onxy, Mosiac Jasper, Amber, African Ruby, Jade Some pieces have been given to me and some i have brought two of my favorites are the bracelet to the left of the photo this was given too me from my Oma (Grandmother) when I was 16 years old, it had been in her mothers side of the family for over 100 years. It is a bracelet from Russia it is hand made with Austrian Mountain Rock Crystals in it and it is solid silver. It comes from the wife of my ancestor who was a personal physican to a Russian Prince. / Another piece is the amber brooch that looks like it has wave patterns in it, it was my Great Grandmothers from Austria My mother gave it too me a few years ago. I like it because it comes from nature but it looks so plastic, its a great talking piece when i am waring it out.
Collection of jewellery that I have been given with gemstones in each one. Austraian Mountain Rock crystals, shell, African Jade, African ruby, Amber, fossiled shell, Onxy, green onxy, Mosiac Jasper

My son 10, taking a picture of my daughter 3, on the Red Rocks, Sedonia, Arizona,
Deep in the heart of Glen Canyon, AZ, there is a little beach. Up a sandy path one finds a cliff face that was once, many thousand years ago, the canvas for generations of our earliest people. These characters probably represent deer as they always appear in single file. Bighorn sheep are a distinctly different character and pronghorns rarely walk in a line.
