Thank you so much for this mini tutorial on the use of the text scripts! I had no idea how to add them to the program, this just opens up my world even further. ;)

Since I’ve noticed quite a few people here are Apophysis fans (and I count myself squarely amongst them), I thought I’d share a link to the gradient packs I’ve made.

Click here for a filtered view of the fractal resources section of one of my offsite galleries

Each of the packs contains a .txt file on how to install and use the gradients. I add a new pack every couple of months (I’ve actually got one that will be ready for posting next week), so check back to see more.

Also, if you use the gradients, drop me a BubbleMail or a Note at deviantArt so I can add your work to my faves. :)

Also, here’s a quick run-through on how to use scripts:

Create a “scripts” subdirectory directory under your Apophysis directory/folder. Then copy the script files (either .asc or .txt, doesn’t matter) into that directory.

Then in Apo, check the toolbar at the top, you’ll see a “Script” heading. Click that to get the script menu. Choose “Open”, browse to your scripts directory and choose a script. Then you can run the script either by clickin on “run” in the script menu or by clicking the green “play” button on the toolbar or by pressing F9.

Depending on the script it might ask you for some parameter values (I just leave them at their defaults!) or it may just run and re-draw the screen with your new fractal.

Some scripts open a small window and looks like its doing an animation of the fractal. Press the black square “stop” button on the toolbar (or F10) to stop it when you like the frame its on, and it will then draw that one larger on your main window. You can also just close the little window by clicking the x in the top right corner, and it will work the same as pressing the stop button. Mostly :)

If you have Apo 2.02 installed, there should already be a number of scripts under C:\program files\apophysis 2.0\scripts . But the cool ones are those one can download ;)

Quick answer to Holly’s question ;)

You have to create a “plugins” subdirectory under your Apophysis directory. Put your plugin files in there, and Apo should pick them up when you start it again. They’ll show in the “variations” menu and tab in the editor.

I have a quick question. Where do you instal the pluging for Apo 3D? I have tried several things and I can not see that they are there. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Holly

Topic: Creative Workshop / [textures] sources ?

For those of you who use textures, what are your usual sources ? Do you make your own, grab free ones ? Any advice on sources of very large files, like more than 6000px large ?

If you’re playing with Apo 3D, give the 3D scripts of shortgreenpigg a try. Especially the 3D Tunnels script. I can give you some tips on how to get started with that one.

Once you’ve run the script, you’ll get a screen with a bunch of dots, not very impressive.
1) Open the Transform Editor (F4), add a transform (button with green + on).
2) Go to the variations tab, make Linear3D 0, and make Bubble 1 (or less, drag in the line left/right to change the value. Double-click to 0, double-click again to make it 1). You should now have a bunch of spotty bubbles in stead of dots on the screen.
3) Add another transform.
4) Make Linear3D 0, and add a bit of Cylinder. This should give you a good ‘tunnel’ effect with bubbles and tubes.
5) Go to the Colors tab and drag the “transform color” slider a random bit for each of the transforms (you should have 10 and a ‘final transform’) This allows each transform to get a different color from the gradient. And now is a good time to go to the gradient editor (F6) and choose a nice color scheme!
6) At this point I usually start messing around with the “final transform”. Select it in the dropdown box (still in the transform editor, F4), go to Variations tab. It has Curl3D set to 1. Make it 0, and work down the list trying out all the options. You can also move it around or scale it, it all has interesting effects on what happens in the fractal. I’m a big fan of all the Julia variations ;-)
7) And that’s it, sort of. You can of course add even more transforms and play with the variations for more intricate details.

I hope this is useful to someone!

Here’s my basic procedure to get 3d-like julias in Apo3D:

First, get the great script pack Assorted Chaos

I’m using the Julia Dream script to generate a simple circle, but it’s the simple things that lead to interesting results.

1) Run the script
2) Go to editor, delete transform 1
3) Move the remaining transform around until you get a nice line drawing of a julia
4) Then add a transform, remove linear3d, add some julia3d or julia3dz
5) Add another transform, do the same
5b) Repeat step 5 as many times as you feel like
6) Play with the variables of your transforms
7) And then finally add a transform and give it a little bit of bubble
8) And that’s it

Don’t use a final transform, it flattens the bubbles!
Now just go Adjust (F5), drag your fractal around in the preview window until it looks nice, get a nice gradient and render!

I hope that helps ;-)
