The Types of Bulb Flowers Definition from ehow.com
Bulbous perennials are called such because of the growth in the stem used to keep the energy and nutrients needed to grow year after year. Roots grow out from the underside of the bulb while the stalk comes from the top, so planting properly is important. Bulbs grow at the very base of the ground with most of the shape showing. They must be placed in shallow trenches versus just scattered like a seed. While there are only two types of true bulbs—-scaly and tunicate, flowers with corms, rhizomes, tubers and tuberous roots are often lumped into the same category as them.
